"Here are some more images of IMAI's 1/50 scale Catalan Merchant Ship. This model is actually a 1/1 scale model of a model whose original now lies in the Prins Hendrik Maritime Museum in Rotterdam. These models often built by mariners were usually given to church's as offerings either for pious reasons or to bring the sailor luck. This model kit is a representation of one those models still in existence. Plus this model is one of the earliest known representations of a European merchant sailing vessel of the 15th century

Very nice! I just bought 2 more Revell "1/72" cog models, so now I have 3 which is the nucleus of a fleet. These go very well with 28mm figures BTW and they are waterlined kits! |

I like that it's a 1:1 model of a model. Very meta. |

As Armand says, it's most probably inspired on contemporary ex voto offerings, some real samples of which are shown at the Reials Drassanes (=Royal Shipyards, or Reales Atarazanas in Spanish) Maritime Museum, Barcelona. |
