If there is a really good source on these I'd appreciate knowing about it. I've mostly ended up trying to cobble stuff together. Anyone help fill in some gaps? Or correct what's here? rifle division guys – normal soviet uniform guard division guys – normal soviet uniform and some (all?) of the guys will wear the guard badge on their right breast naval infantry – this gets a little dicey. Either a normal soviet uniform, and perhaps the striped naval shirt is sometimes visible, or a naval brigade uniform but with helmet rather than soft cap. Help? militia formations – whatever they happened to be wearing, so civilian gear. I guess no one makes figures for these in 28mm but would like to learn otherwise NKVD formations – this is very unclear to me. Were these militia formations with NKVD leadership or actual units of NKVD trained soldiers? If militia I'm guessing the above applies. If the latter would it be regular soviet infantry gear? Or regular soviet infantry gear but with the red collar patches? Thanks all. |

Someone with more specialized knowledge will be along shortly, but I believe Militia formations would have standard uniform as well. NKVD wore uniforms very similar or identical to normal formations, but with special identifiers (like the Guards wore). |

NKVD were internal security, with a lot of missions and subordinate elements, including border guards (similar to Red Army, but with visored caps with green tops, blue band around, blue trousers with red piping), security forces (visored cap with blue tops) and other specialised, like railroad security, forestry, etc. Not militia but trained in light infantry, with basic supporting arms. The NKVD unit at Stalingrad, 10th Division, was internal security forces (so presumably blue caps), but were rapidly integrated with the Red Army, so you can justify a mixture. |

Oddly enough. Just rereading Islands of Fire and there's a quote from Chuikov talking about the Red Navy troops on 12 November: "In the heat of the battle the Red Navy men threw off their greatcoats and in their singlets and hats beat off the attacks and then went over to the offensive themselves." (BTW, how come we still can't buy good Russians in greatcoats in 28mm?) |
