I am preparing a Savage Showdown game for a fall convention that is centered around a cattle drive. Does anyone know of a source of cheap cattle miniatures? The closest I've found are for O scale RR and average about $3 USD+ a figure.

Any size/scale in particular?

I just checked Ebay under "toy cow" and many lots of 1:64 ERTL cows come up, usually 25 or so for between $15 USD-$20 including shipping.

I second the recommendation of ERTL for 25mm-28mm. They'll look a little small, but the price is right and size won't matter as much if you're talking about a herd.

You could also pick up a few more expensive cattle as "hero" minis at the forefront of the herd.

Out of curiosity, which cattle are best for the Old West: angus, guernsey, or holstein? ERTL has all three, but no mixed groups.

Angus cattle did not show u[ in the US until mid 1870s. Gurnsey and holstien both are milk cows and I dont believe they ever made it the old west in numbers enugh to be part of a cattle drive

Herfords made it in the 1820s, and are hearty enough to survive in the west, so you could have some them

For cattle drives out of texas by far and away the beast is the Texas longhorn. Not that they are a grreat beef cow, but they could survive on conditions other breeds could not.

Does the bull take offense when you make a grab for the bottle? grin
