"Earlier this month, Albert Gerard Koenders, the UN Special Representative for Mali, praised China for the contributions its peacekeeping forces made in helping to ensure a smooth presidential election in Mali last month.

"The UN Secretary-General said that China and its peacekeeping role in Mali were very important, but now I would have to say, China's important work has exceeded expectations," Koenders said at the time.

The mission to Mali represented a major shift in China's peacekeeping operations. Specifically, whereas early missions had involved only logistical and medical personnel, in Mali China dispatched actual security forces to help maintain the peace. As Chen Jian, the head of the UN Association of China, told The Financial Times at the beginning of the mission, "This is a major breakthrough in our participation in peacekeeping…"

Anyone know what their rules of engagement are? Do they adhere to UN standards or do they play by their own rules? The security they have sent was tasked to protect their own units (like medical and logistics) and not for use as traditional "Peacekeeping" roles. Would appreciate it if anyone can elaborate on this aspect of their deployment or update my information.

China is the UN Peacekeepers in Cyprus – link … And I think it's fine that they do more UN missions … Maybe local "bad guys" will be less likely to shot at them … And of course adds another force for some wargames …

Not surprising particularly as it is in Africa.

There are 54 countries in Africa China now has embassies in 50 ( the remaining 4 only recognize Taiwan) Africa has become a major project for China for both exports and more importantly imports of raw materials. China is now the dominant power in several countries.

This map shows he extent of Chinese trade

Nice, do you thing China gets deployment experience from this? At least the logistics of sustaining a force outside it's border.

Lion in the Stars11 Aug 2013 11:58 a.m. PST

I'm assuming that China is getting some logistics/deployment experience and keeping the natural resources flowing to China.

Yeah … I'm all for millions of Chinese vs. millions(?) of islamic fanatics … on the gaming table or in the real world … And yes, I think this helps with China getting more experience in Force Projection. Which has always been a large scale capability which they lacked. Especially compared to the US. For the most part, they only could move large numbers of assets by train, truck, bus or as far as they could walk … But it appears that may be changing … And with the events of the past few decades, they may have to change their country's name to the Peoples Capitalist Republic of China … Of course when you ask the average American what he thinks about Red China, the reply is, "It looks good on a yellow table cloth" …

Could you imagine? They would be the only UN Forces that would run over protesters with tanks? (bad joke) However they would be the only UN Peacekeepers who would say "NO" and you would genuinely pause.

Lets be honest, in China you can own an Audi, furnish your apartment with stuff from Ikea, eat at McDonalds, wear your Adidas and Raybans, have a Latte at Starbucks, and you call yourself Middle Class.

China hasn't been Communist for a long while now.

"China hasn't been Communist for a long while now"

Try telling that to anyone who wants a second child ;-)

So true, the Central Committee of the Communist Party has no pretense whatsoever to legitimacy. They weren't elected in open elections, they are beholden to no ideology whatsoever, and their only goals are to perpetuate a status quo where they are on top.

Basically a criminal state.

Is that really a bad thing?

Flecktarn16 Aug 2013 7:32 a.m. PST

China's one child policy is neither as monolithic as it is often portrayed nor an indicator of a communist state.

The policy restricts urban couples to one child, while allowing additional children in several cases, including twins, rural couples, ethnic minorities, and couples who are both only children themselves. It is estimated to affect about 36% of the population.

Anyone in China who wishes to have a second or subsequent child is able to do so; however, there are penalties which include fines and restrictions on access to public services for the "extra" children.

As for China being a criminal state, I cannot see any valid argument for that statement.

As I said, … "Maybe local "bad guys" will be less likely to shot at them … " Works for me … After the US/NATO leaves Afghanistan, have the UN vote to send a couple of PRC Divs. into the area under the UN flag …

Flecktarn16 Aug 2013 7:44 a.m. PST

The problem with sending PLA forces into Afghanistan as UN peacekeepers is that it would probably upset both India and Pakistan who would be very distrustful of Chinese intentions.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP17 Aug 2013 6:47 a.m. PST

Of course … but who cares … wink Not to mention the "dispute" could involve two of the most populated nations on the planet …

Flecktarn17 Aug 2013 8:59 a.m. PST

I suspect that a couple of billion people or so would care greatly, and a few billion more if that distrust led to something that involved nuclear weapons.

yes – i always try to get my Chinese wife and her brother both born in the 1960s in SE China to explain that one to me! As Jurgen says, the truth is always more nuanced than the headline slogan. Spot on with his other comment too – I have no brief, as a Christian, for the CCP but there are plenty of countries without democracy that the West supports or has supported.

Hopefully Flecktarn, they'd keep things conventional … and my comment was in jest so to speak … many Euros don't get my "dark" sense of humor at times …
