Last night I invited (lured) my brother over to my house to teach him the Hail Caesar rules and to get him hooked on ancient wargaming. It was a smashing success!

Lacking a second ancient army, we divided up my Carthaginians and had a fantastic battle.

A full write up and many photos have been posted to the blog:

Nice but I did not learn much about the mechanics of Hail Caesar! from your write up. Regardless, appears you plan worked despite your loss to your brother. What size and manufacturer are your minis? Nice job on the minis btw.

Thanks! The figures are 28mm with a mix of Gripping Beast and Relic Miniatures.

Splendid army – have seen your blog and it was good to see them en masse.

Presume you have joined the Hail Caesar Yahoo group? There is also a handy Hail Caesar site hosted by Warlord Games.

I have found skirmishers can damage heavy infantry (and cavalry for that matter) so inevitably you need skirmishers as well. Otherwise the heavies may have to charge the opposing skirmishers and leave themselves vulnerable to the opposition. It pays to have balanced forces.

Hail Caesar in my view does not get nellies quite right – I have used them in 'units' of 2, getting stuck in rather than as supports.

Overall I like the rules and the battlefield confusion that may arise from failed orders/blunders!

Thanks Mithridates – I agree, going in without skirmishers is a tough order. They were certainly able to wear down my heavy infantry. Exactly what you described ended up happening: I tired of all the stones and javelins thrown my way, so one unit of my infantry decided finally to charge some skirmishers only to see them evade and disappear – leaving that unit open to some beating.
