I ordered this and rather fancied taking it away on holiday with me for the inevitable rainy days that invariably follow me around- I am off to London for a week of sightseeing and museum bashing. And bang on time it arrives with two days to spare.

The volume looks gorgeous and is so comprehensive it beggars belief. But, and as usual there is a but…it's too chuffin heavy to cart about with my luggage. Some people are never satisfied!

Henry has developed a whopper.

Well done Henry. It really must be a weight off your mind now it's available.

I'l just have to wait to I come home to get stuck into it.

Is the books title a secret?

:D

'The Wargaming Compendium'.

It's fantastic too with something for gamers of all ages, experience and abilities. This will be a classic.

bruntonboy06 Aug 2013 7:17 a.m. PST

Apologies I thought the whole world had been waiting with baited breath for it's arrival and it was common knowledge.

CraigH06 Aug 2013 7:35 a.m. PST

Well that's annoying – neither Chapters nor Amazon (.ca and .com) are selling it directly – only through re-sellers.

Joppyuk06 Aug 2013 8:05 a.m. PST

Mine arrived this morning, I've had a quick look through but am saving detailed examination till end of the month when I've a week in the Lake District. It's bound to be raining by then!

battleeditor06 Aug 2013 8:50 a.m. PST

@bruntonboy
My apologies, I did ask them to print it on flimsy, rubbish paper, but they insisted on doing a quality job and thus the final heft of 1.47 kilos. I suggest you practice by carrying large armies of metal 28mm miniatures around for a bit – players who prefer plastics may require some kind of training regime to prepare themselves. wink

Thanks for your kind comments, folks.

Quite what Amazon are up to is beyond me. The publishers, Pen & Sword, assure me that supplies have been sent, but perhaps you might like to contact them via their website at
link

They also have a Twitter account @penswordbooks

I ordered my copy from Amazon this morning.

I was hoping that a trader at Claymore would be carrying it but if they did I didn't see them.

My next show is Border Reiver and I didn't want to wait that long.

Huscarle06 Aug 2013 10:45 a.m. PST

Just ordered my copy too, one of my mate's received his from Amazon yesterday & confirms that it is excellent grin

Count Belisarius06 Aug 2013 11:36 a.m. PST

I've just finished reading my copy and really enjoyed it. I'll be posting a review on my blog at the weekend when I get back in the UK.

What, no Kindle edition ? :-)

battleeditor07 Aug 2013 4:49 a.m. PST

@Earthquake

They're trying to make the Kindle version weigh the same as the paper publication because, as you well know Neil, wargamers like a bit of heft.

Anyway, has your postman been yet? Watch your doormat.

Ordered mine from bookdepository.co.uk, with free shipping worldwide – arrived in a week to Australia.

Fantastic book, a worthy companion to Grant's 'The War Game', and Lewin's 'War Games and their History' (along with a bunch by Featherstone & a few other luminaries!).

Thanks Henry.

Cheers

Still going through the book..man, it takes me back to my early days of wargaming in the 1970s!Couldn't wargame with Airfix though..at that age I felt it was 'childish!'

Craig Ambler12 Aug 2013 4:13 a.m. PST

My copy is at home now, so I will certainly have the pleasure of reading (looking at pictures) this evening.

Ordered from Amazon when I saw it commented here a couple of months back. It was awaiting me 2 weeks later and that delivered to Thailand. I've no complaints with Amazon's service.

And yes, it's a decent read. I liked his Horse & Musket rules, they had a nice old school feel and the way he went down to individual companies with his 'small' and 'extra small' units was a simple joy. I wish I'd thought of that.

battleeditor20 Aug 2013 1:54 a.m. PST

You can see the rules in action in a game played on Saturday on my Flickr feed here: link

The scenario was 'Bridge Demolition', the very first Table Top Teaser.

Note that the game has a very old school look because we used my Spencer Smiths – the rules work equally well with other styles of miniature!

Please also note the support site has a Q&A page with errata at thewargamingcompendium.com

I'm also finishing off playsheets that you will be able to download shortly.

Great pix Henry. I have your book, but haven't got up to the section on your rules yet. :)

Is there a list of OBs for the game?

Big battalions & squadrons. What figure scale did you use? Something like 1:15?

And what size is the table?

Cheers
Paul

Snowcat20 Aug 2013 10:53 p.m. PST

PS Nice shots of the 'Loftwaffe' by the way. ;)

battleeditor21 Aug 2013 2:10 a.m. PST

@Snowcat – your questions about figure scale will be answered when you read Chapter 7. There isn't a fixed figure scale, it's the bases that count, not the figures mounted on them, but I suppose you could say it's around 1:20 for the 'old school' variant, double that for the standard variant. But these are just suggestions: you could use whatever size of miniatures you want, in whatever quantities you want, to achieve the look you want and suit your budget.

My table is 8 feet by 6.

No, there's no specific OOB – just download the Teaser from my blog as suggested, which lists the forces involved. I just threw it together the night before the game using a right old hotch-potch of units grabbed from my boxes, with only Von Klinkertor, Von Schmidt and Von Eintopf playing their true roles! Other units were given names at the write-up stage for the purposes of the narrative (shock, horror, probe, scandal!) There's so much 'making it up' going on here that it's almost meta-imagi-nations!!! But the game was real! grin

Snowcat21 Aug 2013 5:34 a.m. PST

Thanks Henry

I'd wondered why you'd switched from the battalions of 24 and squadrons of 8+ (mentioned early in your book) to battalions of 42 and squadrons of 12 (at least that's how it looked in your recent game photos).

Great names too. ;)

Cheers

This afternoon, I'm going to be interviewed on Brighton's Radio Reverb by Paul Stones on his In Brighton Monday show. The programme lasts an hour, starting at 17.00 and ending at 18.00.

I have no idea what he's going to ask me, but no doubt the subject matter will revolve around the hobby of wargaming and, naturally, the book!

If you follow the link to the website, you'll see the link to listen to the show live. It will also be repeated tomorrow.

I have just uploaded playsheets for my "Shot, Steel & Stone" horse and musket rules, which are free to download for owners of the book.

Please note that the password to access the downloads area has been updated, so you'll need to check your copy of the book.

I hope you have a chance to try the rules, which are designed to be fun, but also give a historically plausible result.

Henry

battleeditor12 Sep 2013 2:24 a.m. PST

Thanks to Alan Butler for pointing out that the table headings on page 3 of the playsheet, bottom left, should read "Turning Rear Rank About" not "Read Rank"! Doh! (The perils of copying and pasting in a hurry…

SO, I've updated the playsheet concerned.
