Great link TelesticWarrior, takes me back to how I used to play soldiers with my brothers when I was young! The canons fired matchsticks in our games though way back then. He has a lot to answer for! |

True. Only really hints at what he does though. Either way, still a good article over all. |

The reference to Warhammer makes sense, as that is probably the only wargame with figures that will be familiar -perhaps via their own/friends' children – to the majority of readers. And Warhammer rules are definitely 'Old School' in structure and mechanisms. As far Phil Barker, I can't help but remark that, much as one may respect his research into ancient warfare and numerous contributions to the development of the hobby, I doubt anyone will pick up a copy of his rules simply to read them for pleasure – as one can Little Wars – in a hundred years' time
Perhaps more rules should be written by novelists? If you are looking for another theme, JK Rowling? |

Harry Potter and the War of the Austrian Succession? Harry Potter and Jenkins' Ear? |

There have been quite a few articles in (UK) mainstream media about wargaming in the last couple of weeks. Is The Hobby (TM) becoming a bit more "ordinary" rather than "that thing that the bizarre blokes do" ? |

There was an item on British news about 3D printing the other day which mentioned wargaming as an a possible application for this technology. Ok, so we're not really there yet, but it was nice to get the mention – something a bit more specific than printing bath plugs and chess pieces. |

Is The Hobby (TM) becoming a bit more "ordinary" rather than "that thing that the bizarre blokes do" ? Never been sure what 'The Hobby (TM)' is – my interest, wargaming, is far from ordinary but it is normal enough, and accepted, these days. The massive interest in military leisure topics, books, TV shows etc. coupled with the numbers at reenactment/heritage events can't really be ignored in Little Wars centenary year(see the war gaming exhibition at the V&A/MoC)
It has been thus for some time but what is noticeable is that the obligatory cheap jibes that give us all a smile (not) seem to be being left out these days (those, as you put it: "that thing that the bizarre blokes do" bits) .. Good. Phil |
