Its been while coming
.however this will be my first vehicle release
.Horraahhh I say. It still needs to be printed , cleaned, molded and made ready, however this will be one of my first releases so I thought Id give a sneak peak! Its the BTR 290, professionally sculpted by Steve CoolHands 3d models. A mighty fine job he did to! (I think :)) Ill be posting details of Coolhands 3d models soon with more pictures. What on earth are those VTOL jets and fans I hear you say
.well lets just say the BTR can also provide its own long distance lift capability! The lift capability is removed until a long distance drop is required and until then it travels like conventional vehicles. The VTOL harrier type exhaust/jets power the lift fans with assistance from 6 thrusters.
The BTR can carry 10 troops and packs heavy cannon and Gatling gun HMG for support. Their has been unconfirmed reports of seberal variations
. maybe even a British and Sino/PLA vehicle or two! thanks

Really like the look of the vehicle but I'm not sure about the fans
. |

Not sure on fans either , the fans are seperate correct ? One can opt not to install them |
Armiesarmy | 02 Aug 2013 11:52 a.m. PST |
Entirely optional I think they are rather neat However I would :) |

Personally I'd drop the fans but the rest looks good – and I've got those RUSK troopers that need support. Regards Edward |

'Glasnost' is a little bit strange name for combat vehicle ;) And I agree – fans look odd. They just don't look like they could lift this otherwise nice vehicle. |
Irish Marine | 02 Aug 2013 1:23 p.m. PST |
The Fans could be used for lift in a less then heavy gravity environment like the Moon or something similiar. |
dwartist | 02 Aug 2013 1:43 p.m. PST |
"Entirely optional" – that makes it much more appealing to me (but the fans are growing on me!). I think the yellow on the render is putting me off a little. |

"The Fans could be used for lift in a less then heavy gravity environment like the Moon or something similar." OK, I'll beat the OFM to it – How do fans, which need air to work, function on a moon with no air? Admittedly, on a planet with atmosphere too thin to support a realistically -sized parachute, this *might* be an option, but flying directly in the face of known physics is just too much for the scientist in me. ( I'm not against the concept, per se, and given that such lift jets have been seriously proposed to allow added abilities to light vehicles in real life . . . ) There's a limit to how far you can stretch even "rubber science". BTW, I actually like the mini – lovely clean lines and a solid feel to it :) |

Great looking vehicle, but I would definitely pitch the fans as some kind of amphibious propulsion system rather than a VTOL one. |
erraticassassin | 02 Aug 2013 2:23 p.m. PST |
The fans would work better for me if there were four of them rather than two, but otherwise it's an interesting concept – plus, the lift system looks like it's disposable and could be jettisoned after insertion into a landing zone. (Which in some ways makes more sense than either having lots delivered in a huge dropship, or building individual dropships to carry each vehicle.) The vehicle itself is a pretty nice design too. |
Lfseeney | 02 Aug 2013 2:45 p.m. PST |
Perhaps the fans allow flyby drops, no landing for the drop ship. Turns the APC into a glider of sorts. Low G high atmosphere worlds would work even better. Nice look, would use REM to attach. Lee |

I like it for the rusk. Why not call it the "snowden" Just like that guy
.. if it gets into trouble, it just flies away. ;-) Hee hee |

I like the general vehicle design, but like the others, would lose the fans/lift capability, since for a heavy vehicle like that, it doesn't appear they'd have any effect whatsoever, unless to generate a nice breeze for a dismounted crew. |
McWong73 | 02 Aug 2013 4:43 p.m. PST |
I wouldn't mind the fans for my bitz box, plenty if uses for those, but like the others I'm not so keen with them on the vehicle. |
McWong73 | 02 Aug 2013 4:43 p.m. PST |
And i'm seriously loving this vehicle btw |
Richard Gaulding | 02 Aug 2013 5:02 p.m. PST |
I'm another one who's not really a fan of the fans and jets, but the vehicle underneath is all kinds of cool! |
wminsing | 02 Aug 2013 5:28 p.m. PST |
I love the overall vehicle have to agree the fans don't seem plausible to me. But if they are optional I'll be happy to use the vehicle itself! -Will |

I love both models
I think the fan transport is great too. It looks like it has 6 thrusters as well, useful for the places with no atmo. It'd be a great way to quick-drop a squad transport/support in! |
RTJEBADIA | 02 Aug 2013 6:48 p.m. PST |
I like it
I think I'd like mine with jets but no fans. Would make a nice "Mako" substitute for Mass Effect games. |

No you had it right the first time. If the atmosphere is too thin for parachutes it's too thin for fans to work. The fan blades have to push something to generate thrust. Other than that
Nice model. Lose the fans. |

Keep the fans, just use magnets to mount them! Love the design! |

Fans will be optional, ill post some pics of the btr without them later. Ill be using them as drop ship vehicle for getting my forces onto the table. Something a little bit different. The option may end up on shape ways as components. They are probably very handy for other conversions. The rusks will also likely have a new "mule" vehicle which can transport a fire-team, heavy weapons or supplies. This will be followed by a bdm type scout vehicle I'm also working on British and Sino/PLA vehicles and something a little bit 'different' from the current earth based forces
. Thanks for the feedback all Keith |

I think it looks excellent. I think the fans/jets/thrusters have all of the hall marks of an insertion device rather than something you'd keep on for much use during combat (although – like a DD Sherman – something that would probably stay with the vehicle until someone had the time/spanners to remove it). I see it as a better alternative for insertion than parachutes (as you can actually steer where you are going) – rather like a glider insertion but individually tailored to a single vehicle's needs (back to DD Shermans). Sure, everybody wants grav vehicles and grav insertion but who can afford it? (in game world terms) I'd also see a role for the lift engines post landing (just to make them fun on the game table top). I'd either alow them to traverse poor terrain better by using them to reduce ground pressure (move as light hover) or I'd allow them to splurge their engine power/fuel and over rev them to destruction and allow just one hop on the battlefield to get over serious terrain, after which the engines are now wrecked. I would/will use this vehicle in a heartbeat for at least one Slammer's force in a late time line upgrade (ie at least one of the other mercenary companies). Great work Keith (and your designer): looking forward to it! John T |

Great vehicle. I like realistic vehicles much more than fancy sci-fi from the 60 ties look. It will be very nice complimentary vehicle to Khurasan DOE using force. Fans do looks cool, but I agree that they not seam to be useful, and on the ground vehicle would just drop them out.. But they will be very cool terrain piece for a dropzone (jettisoned drop equipment). |

Some BTR renders without the insertion fans link link
People will or will not use these as they see fit (the beauty of scifi) however they were intended as an insertion device, pretty much as John T describes. Rather then a bigdrop ship, these can insert themselves. Once they land, they simply dispose until needed again. They were not intended to be used in battle I like the idea they can help give additional 'grunt' and Ill be 'borrowing' that idea for my own games. Ill just have to write them into my games with house rules
More pics on my blog armiesarmy.blogspot.com p.s
if anyone knows any free and easy software to provide some colored, lighting, shadows etc for my stl renders, please let me know :) thanks Keith |

Are you still planning on the Neo Soviet power armor with the shoulder mounted weapon? |
CorSecEng | 04 Aug 2013 9:56 p.m. PST |
Fans could have several uses. They could give a boost of vertical thrust to jump small rivers or canyons. It could also be used as near future anti grav assist. Low tech grav gives a small amount of vertical thrust but not enough for sustained flight or maneuvering. The fans would allow it to navigate rough terrain or cross a river. Actually it dawns on me that it would make a great stealth beach lander. Drop it into the water off shore and the fans become props. It can slowly move into show under cover of the water and pop up on the beach with a full load of marines to give someone a bad day. |

I bet those fans could create one hell of a dustcloud in a desert, instant duststorm to hide in ;-) |
