What is your favorite plane used in WW2? I'm love the look and lines of the P-38 Lightning.
Though the Dornier Do 335 is pretty cool too.
How about you? |

I'm with you on the P-38. |

P-38 definitely gets top shelf for me too. But if I had to pick one, I've always loved the no-nonsense look of the P-40, especially in the OD/Neutral Gray schemes

I have always been partial to the Macchi MC 200/202/205, very sleek lines especially the 202 & 205.I also have always had a soft spot for the Brewster Buffalo
. something about flying the equivalent of a beer keg through the air! What can I say, I always like the underdogs. Tom D |

So many great ones to choose from but it has to be the Mosquito, just edging out the Lancaster, Sunderland and Spitfire Mk IX. |
Texas Jack | 29 Jul 2013 8:36 a.m. PST |
You asked for only a favorite, but that is much too difficult. Thus: F4U Corsair Spitfire Hawk 75, aka P-36 Mosquito SBD Dauntless |

Judged on looks only, I would have to pick the P-38 as well. Second place, in my opinion, would go to the Spitfire, the semi-elliptical shaped wings, when seen from above, below or while banking are beautiful.

Spitfire and or Mossie. Although not quite in the spirit of your question, as a kid, I always liked the way the Ju-87s exploded in the "Battle of Britain"movie! ;-) |

All those mentioned are worthy, but I always have a soft spot in my heart for the MiG-3
I guess it is because it looks more like a speed racer than a fighter. |

ME-262. Love em or hate em the Germans pointed the way to fighter design for the next 50 years or so. |
ancientsgamer | 29 Jul 2013 9:43 a.m. PST |
Axis: Macchi and FW 190 for shear looks Allied: Mustang B (like the non-bubble canopy better) and probably the P-38 as well If we are talking shear performance, the P-51 D hands down will a grudging nod to the ME-262 (combat range was a problem for this plane though) |
Rogues1 | 29 Jul 2013 9:44 a.m. PST |
I have always loved the P-51 (and still do), but I was at an airshow and saw a Mig-3, that is one unbelievable airplane. Even my late father who designed mostly helicopters during and after the war stopped and paused at that one. I would like to add I have a soft spot for the T-28 Trainer. I flew one in Navy flight school just before they were phased out. That engine was enormous, but great for speed. Love this thread. |

For me,the Ju-87 Stuka.Not a great plane,but a real icon.I had a model as a kid(Revell).For the Allies,a tie between the Spitfire and the Mustang. |

F4U for me, it's a wonderful aircraft and I have a family link to it (my Grandfather was an RNZAF Flight Sgt in charge of assembling them when they arrived on Espiritus Santos in crates). 2nd place is the Westland Whirlwind for its sleek lines superb performance and almost great status if only the engines could have been made reliable enough.
