Are there any sources for the above? I have a pretty reliable source for the US Navy in Snyder & Shorts US Navy Camouflage 1941-1945. Is there a similar source for the RN and other Commonwealth nations? I will be ordering several RN units fom Shapeways and need some schemes to differentiate one ship classmate from another. Anyhoo Thanks and salut y'all. Bruce the Texas Grognard |

Oh, dear Lord, do NOT go by the depictions on that site! There is virtually no accuracy there--particularly as regards color. If you want to know about RN camouflage, get the 4 softbound books from WR Press on the subject. |

From what I've been told, the cammo schemes on this site are quite good, if they're toned down. |

The site doesn't even identify the colors used! |

I hate to be negative, but the Alan Raven books are seriously flawed. Alan Raven is the dean of British camo patterns and is probably the single best authority on the subject. I bought them when first released and was appalled by the numerous, obvious errors. The covers are in color but the contents are black and white with the colors given as crosshatch patterns. Many of the drawings are of the wrong ship, or the legends are in error, such as two portside drawings instead of port and starboard, 3-color schemes with five-color legends and vice versa, the wrong class shown, etc. The publisher blamed the printer for mixing up the illustrations, but the same types of error kept happening in every volume. Why didn't they change printers when the first volume turned out so poorly? Although subsequent volumes list corrections to earlier ones, they didn't get them all. You will need other sources to confirm the schemes, but if you have other sources, why buy these? Use only with extreme caution! |

Blado48: can you recommend an alternative source? Regards, J. P. Kelly |

but if you have other sources, why buy these? <snip> Because there is no single source which is "without error". Given that WWII was 70-plus years ago, and given that definitive evidence frequently doesn't exist, what do you expect? IMHO, Raven (with the corrections) is a good starting point. If you really want to further minimize "error" in your miniatures, you need to look at multiple sources, and use your best judgement. Also, keep in mind that even if you had exact camouflage drawings and actual color chips, you still would be way off due to "scale color" concepts as they apply to small models viewed using interior lighting. In any case, here's another site which has been helpful to me; for example look for Prince of Wales on this site. link MH |

Mal Wright is putting out a comprehensive series of books on WWII RN camouflage schemes through a major UK publisher. The first volume should be out within the next year. |
