I spent over 3 hours last night assembling a tamiya 1/48 wirbelwind for bolt action. I would really like to avoid long assembly times as I enjoy painting and gaming much more.

Can anyone recommend a simple to assemble 1/48 (or 1/56) scale huey kit for Viet Nam? I don't want to be gluing various excessive details many kits come with. I've looked at diecast stuff but it is all OOP and costs quite alot on ebay.

Monogram makes a 1/48 USMC Huey, I bought about eight of them over the years.

Looks like Revel may have bought the rights though.

There are some minor "wrong" details if you are precise about exactly the shape of the tail, or which Huey version had the engine intake particle screens, but it is simple enough to leave off the weaponry for passable "basic" short cabin Huey.

Thanks very much Mardaddy- that kit looks much simpler than the tamiya ones I've been using for bolt action.

Now if only there were an affordable diecast one…

I have a project in my queue right now to do a Vietnam themed 40k Imperial Guard force, using Huey's "counts-as" Valkyrie transports (and tripod-50cals as Autocannons, recoiless rifle jeeps as Sentinels, etc.)

I already test-assembled one Huey to figure it out, magnetizing the rotor assemblies and flying base mount so they could be broken down for easy storage and transport.

Plus, I can use the army for ACTUAL 28mm Vietnam gaming if that opportunity came about.

I'll try to get some of my Huey pics posted & linked in here when I get home.

Hobbyboss make a UH-1C in 1/48th scale might be worth a closer look & save on all that conversion.
I would just love a 1/48th scale UH-34 any offers?

Corgi did a 1/48 one a few years ago.

Here's one on ebay – auction

The Monagram/ Revell kit is a UH-1B which is shorter than a UH-1D. Not exactly a troop carrier but its a good gunship model. I have quite often seen 1/48 ish scale UH-1D's in cheap asian toy shops in rescue or police liveries. Also I have noticed that its very rare to get 1/48 and even 1/72 scale helicopters with pilot figures and they are also not readily available aftermarket either. You might want to think about modeling with windows painted and doors closed, that would save on painting and construction times!

I just picked up the hobbyboss huey 1C, but now I'm getting confused on the various huey designations-

Slicks refer to troop transports, but what huey designation were slicks?

Cobras had cannons and hogs had rockets (according to wiki), but were they 1B's or 1C's or 1D's or could any model be made into a slick/cobra/hog with just a weapons change?

@BigNickR excellent thanks, just for the sake of something different

BigNickR26 Jul 2013 10:26 a.m. PST

Of course there is also the WAY cheaper Revel/Monogram kit…

It's pretty dated, link and mediocre on the details, link but at almost a third the price, possibly a better choice for a wargaming piece.

HammerHead26 Jul 2013 10:49 p.m. PST

@BigNickR The Revel/Monogram kit dose not seem too much trouble in fitting details to make it look reasonable…at that price seems cheap enough. I`ll get my Marines into battle with this one!

Italeri makes/made a D in 1/48, i have several
this is pretty much the same kit.
