The HAWKs ran their third annual "Armies for Kids" project game at Historicon on Saturday afternoon. The game was held as part of the HAWKs' Kids Table program in which the club runs a series of games designed especially for kids on two specially designated tables all day Friday and Saturday at the con. Eric Schlegel volunteered to run the "Armies for Kids" game this year, and he had a full house of five eager players.

This year's project was Civil War themed and each kid was awarded complete 54mm Union and Confederate Armies as well as a box of terrain, after the game. During the game, Eric asked players ACW trivia, and those that got the right answer got special bonuses in the game.

This year figures were generously donated by Randy Seybert and Ross Macfarlane. The club spent the past year preparing and painting the figures. Several pieces of terrain were constructed especially for the project by Chris Johnson, who also helped paint some of the figures for us.

WOW!

Those kids certainly did NOT Suffer in the "US Department of Freebie Giveaway type Thingies and Stuff", did they?

That was…MORE than generous of youse guise!

Please remind me next year so I can send a $5 USD or $10 USD spot in order to help defray your costs a bit…very least I could do in light of your efforts and generosity!

Well done! Looks like they had a great time and left with everything they need to continue playing at home with friends.

Nice effort all around.

I would like to thank all of the folks who volunteered their time painting up the figures for the kids.

Everyone did a great job to help these kids have a great memory from the show.

The give away was amazingly generous, and the trivia questions during the game were great fun! My son had a wonderful time, and really liked the two GMs running the game, he said they were great fun!

One minor caveat – for kids, the concept of a 'fair' game is pretty important. Having an equal number per side would be a good thing, and ensuring that the age breakout is balanced is a good idea too. The game was run with the 2 youngest players on one side, and the 3 oldest players on the other – and it appeared that the 3 players did have a 50% larger army than the younger ones.

Still, the main point was getting kids into the hobby, and I cannot say how amazed I was by the generosity in what was provided in the giveaway. My son feels truly appreciative of what was given to him, and he's already made plans to enlist some of the local kids in civil war battle this weekend. :D

Hat's off to the gents who provided their time and money to make this a great memory for the youngsters!

It took us a while to find this site, but I'm glad we finally did.

This was our first year participating at Historicon and I was really happy to see groups like the HAWKs, trying and make it fun for all ages.

My son participated with this group at Historicon and he had a blast! I want to thank the HAWKs for sponsoring this event and getting the little ones 'hooked' on a fun activity. Since Historicon, our son has been wanting to play his miniature game on a regular basis.

I want to thank the HAWKs, especially Eric Schlegel, for the teaching a new game, teaching a bit of history to the kids and especially for the miniature game set.

Best regards,
Maraxus101
