When looking for a way to bulk out my Kings of War army quickly, I came across the now OOP prepainted Confrontation Wolfen figures. You can find them for less than a buck each online. Not the most amazing figs ever, and there are some unattended-to mold lines, but definitely a good deal. I discovered that as well as having a rotating waist (very nice when ranking them up) they are multipart models and can easily be twisted apart and repositioned/reglued at the biceps and neck. Anywho, I'm nearly finished rebasing a batch that might get some touch-ups and a dip. I'll do a gallery post later, but I'm curious to hear if anyone else has converted, repainted or otherwise used these figs? |

As a fan of the earlier editions I avoided the rubbery prepaints like a plague. Lately though I've considered grabbing a batch of them on the cheap in order to play some games with young kids who would likely manhandle my metal figs. Still Aarklash themed battles but using SoB&H for rules
Confrontation is a bit too baroque for 8yr olds. |

I remember being literally disgusted with the lack of detail compared to the metals, but I am willing to bet that more careful cleanup to get all the mold lines and a brown or black wash would make them look pretty decent. (Gotta have good cleanup before washing, the wash will find every single mold line you missed!) I mean, if just giving Heroclix a wash turns them from "meh" to "nice models", the Rackham prepaints were already better than those. |

If you can direct me to where "You can find them for less than a buck each online.", I'd appreciate it! I have 4 of them and would like to put together a small skirmish force for playing a d10 variant of Song of Blades and Heroes. Thanks! |

Are you using the d10 for quality only, Acharnement? I have been considering that. I have been intending to use them for SoBaH, as well. I picked up tons of the Confrontation PPP's when Fantasy Flight dumped their stock. I have around a dozen old metal wolfen as well. I was not "disgusted" with the quality of the plastics. It is what it is. It was just a shame the pre-paints completely replaced the wonderful pewter minis. |

Were any "rubbery"? They seem quite brittle to me. |

Been having lots of fun with them :
Use them for fantasy frontier games. link

Were any "rubbery"? They seem quite brittle to me. Well, from what I saw of them in person they were both rubbery and brittle
by that I mean that many I saw had bendy swords/spears and I could bend their arms a bit by hand
BUT, they also seemed easy to snap. So kind of like a mix of rubber and wax
or something. The guy at the local store told me a number of the boxes were coming in with broken parts bouncing around. But if I can some of them cheap enough I won't mind tiny hands having their way with them. |
M C MonkeyDew | 16 Jul 2013 5:02 a.m. PST |
Yes the spears tend to bend and yet if you are not careful are easily snapped. Also the joints of all the Racham Plastics were not always secure. In some cases what appeared to be "broken in the box" was simply the odd arm or leg coming loose from its socket and easily replaced. Not all, just some. The figures are full of detail if one wants to bring it out and very easy to modify as the plastic cuts well, accepts super glue well, and holds paint well. Hope that helps. |

It's not like the Rackham pewter was all that solid, either. Softest metal I have ever worked with, and that includes cast fishing weights! |

Miniatures Market is where I got them. 30 for $20. USD link Looks like they've parted out a bunch of box sets in to lots. Really great prices on the box set or as components. I piked up the terrain piece for $5 USD and the rulebook with map for $1. USD They also have the Humans from the boxed set at 8 for $10 USD or 50 for $40 USD link I agree that the figs aren't the best ever, but they're certaintly better than average. As was pointed out, they're much better than Mage Knight or Heroclix. The plastic doesn't seem particularly brittle, but the figs can be separated at various points. That's actually a plus for me as I want to reposition them so they won't all be looking alike. I put the dip on last night and they are looking pretty good. About as nice as my own paintjobs for line infantry especially now that they're on nice rock (bark) bases. The only thing that drops them below my own standards is a few mold lines. I didn't clean them up for fear of messing up the paintjob, but they do catch the dip. I probably should have tried trimming them anyway. I'll blog them soon. If I didn't have a huge lot of Essex 25's I'd buy the human infantry for my KOW forces as well. M C, Thanks for the pics. Pretty cool stuff there. What are your opinions of Darkstorme? |
M C MonkeyDew | 16 Jul 2013 3:40 p.m. PST |
Darkstormme is fun and based on the Erin/Typhon rules mechanics. Figures have 3 or 4 stats and combat is a roll to hit/ roll to defend sort of affair. Shields may be broken. Armour may fall of. All that sort of thing. As such I find it works best for smaller fights but of course like any rules when you keep at it you can use more. The magic system is of the pick and choose spells from a list variety. A small volume with good play value. Oh and it uses 2d6 for all or most rolls IIRC. |

The plastics are exceptional. I would argue that the Lion and Ram army are still some of the best plastics on the market, especially the Lion knights and the Ram Vamphyrs. The plastic Lion Chimera is one of the best miniature sculpts _ever_. |

I'm actually quite curious about the D10 variant for SOBH as well. Before, I clearly preferred SOBH over Ares.. but lately Ares is kinda growing on me. I still gotta get a few more games going in both systems to decide on one to stick to. I personally love the activation system of SOBH.. but my girlfriend isn't a fan for whatever reason. She personally prefers the basic/classic IGOUGO system.. which I think is kinda outdated. |

SoBH can also be stretched to a d12 with little conversion required, since you are just doubling the range of the d6. All existing stats drop right in. |
Acharnement | 19 Jul 2013 8:38 p.m. PST |
Ordinarybass: Thanks a lot for the links to the Miniature Market. Too good to say no to that deal! d10 and d12 for SoBH is what we prefer currently. It makes the double result for the kill a lot more frequent-which is what we want. I guess I should start another thread on that topic though! |
gorenut | 20 Jul 2013 10:21 p.m. PST |
So you guys are just playing the game with D10 or D12 without modifying the stats? Not sure I like that as the game becomes much more luck-based it seems. I was thinking of a system that allows for a far greater range in stats so there can be more detailed stats. |
Farstar | 21 Jul 2013 11:39 p.m. PST |
A '3' stat becomes a '6' stat with a d12. Same probability. The advantage is that while the d6 gives a very granular change between a '2' and '3', the d12 bumps those to '4' and '6' and gives you access to a '5' between them. |

Ordinarybass, what are you using them as in KOW? I like your idea, we have some players at my local club and it would be great to be able to join them with little effort. Are they human or orc sized, or even bigger? I would guess that a whole army of werewolves would not fit the bill, or indeed work as i think they are "monsters" rather than "troopers" in the game. Would be cool to have an army that differs from the normal ones but is not a super powered troopers army, that is not my style AT ALL.. I have flicked through but do not actually own the rules yet but would be happy to jump in with both feet if i could do it easily. |
Brother Jim | 04 Aug 2013 8:17 a.m. PST |
Stewbags the confrontation Wolfen are the size of big ogres. They're roughly twice as big as a human figure. Edit: If the figures in the pictures are still on 40mm bases that would help with sizing. But the OP said they were rebased, but they look like they're on the original bases with flocking added. Unfortunately mine are across the country right now so I can't provide measurements. |
Stewbags | 04 Aug 2013 3:34 p.m. PST |
Cool, so they would make a great ogre type army in KOW. |
PatrickWR | 05 Aug 2013 1:35 p.m. PST |
Here are the werewolves that ordinarybass was talking about, in action! We played Kings of War last week and we both fielded a regiment of werewolves. they proved to be quite potent on the battlefield.

Stewbags | 05 Aug 2013 4:05 p.m. PST |
Ok, so maybe not so great as a werewolf only army then, sounds like it would be too powerful and i dont like playing just uber trooper armies. I think. Will just order a couple of lots and see where we go from there. |
