One of my favorite weapons of the Vietnam War. The M55 Quad .50 Ma Deuce AKA The Maxson Meat Chopper thumbs up Especially the Gun Truck mounted ones grin .Robert

Yes, thanks for that. The Maxson quad is a very cool weapon. In WWII they even tested one mounted on a Stuart chassis, but the half-track M16 version won out.

They were very popular in Korea also grin. Robert

Thanks for posting that HistoryPhD. I was trying to. But Youtube for some reason wouldn't let me get the link to share. Robert

Like I said it is one of my favorites. Very useful on the Gun Trucks for convoy use.I read somewhere where in Hue both Ontos and M55s were used. Robert

Sent the link to good friend who was one of the Marine this guy supported with his gun truck. My friend the Marine was also at Khe Sanh… Here is what he said.

Well…, I'll be damned…., those guys gave the 5th marines great support--quads were just plain awesome the slopes did not like them one bit . Duster/Quad guys were interested in the marine Ontos, a track vehicle with 6 – 106 RR. Plus .50 cal spotting …., they too were awesome but too thin skinned for Hue. But they used them what else.., the 48's got their bell rung by RPG 40's. The ARVN Walker Bulldog M41 had a 76 mm but could not handle Soviet anti tank missiles. I hate to say anything.., but in the Big picture of the Marines.., the RTO man is Cpl. JJ Sewbluski…, L/Cpl Robert Wayman on the M-60 Hog…, Cpl. Roy Parker attacking through the gate with his squad…, small world. If I can find it in my writings i'll send a copy of that picture with the names that I sent to 8th and I. Semper Fi and Thanks, deeply appreciated. Just came back.., 2.5 weeks ago from the "Land of Oz," spent time on some of the streets when my outfit was assigned to F/2/5.., Marine Rifle Company has about 245-255 men.., when I reported to Fox…, they 96 effectives. I wanted back to Khe Sanh …, Hue was a pure death trap. We had no training in street fighting, so it was learn as you go.
I'm Vietnam Vet also I showed up in country at the end of May 68.. Small world

The French at Dien Bien Phu even had some Quad .50s. I remember when I was at Cadet training at FT. Lewis, WA in '78 the 9th ID still had some. I believe I heard, that in RVN, they were referred to as "Whispering Death" by the VC/NVA. They could be fire indirectly, as the .50cal had very long range (6800 meters, IIRC ? old fart ). And the falling rounds sounded like a whisper. Of course, by the time you heard that, it was too late …
