Why did they decommission two Göteborg class corvettes and keep the two older Stockholm class in service?

It sounds like the Stockholms were thoroughly rebuilt and modernized in 1999-2000, but not the Göteborg class. The newer ships may have needed more work.

Decisions like that always come down to the material condition of the ships.

The first boat I was assigned to was built back in the early 1980s, commissioned in … 84(?, IIRC). She was in much better shape than my second boat, even though the second boat was 13 years younger.

Yeah, I kind of figured that. Its funny you mention that Lion. I was on a sub tender that was assigned to a squadron of 637's and Batfish, the newest, was the lemon of the bunch.
