Over the last few weeks, I've been working on drawing a wargamer friendly map that covers the first days fighting west of Gettysburg. The map below is what I came up with. The topology, fields, fence lines, and Willoughby Run have all been simplified to make setup/preparation easier. My question is do you think my map has any major flaws? Would you use this map to game the battle? I plan to run separate morning and afternoon scenarios. If play testing goes well, I hope to take these games to fall-in this year. (These games will be regimental scale using 10mm figures)(Looking at using piquet Field of Battle or Look Sarge No Charts for rules)

The map scale is 1"=40yds. The map grid is 1'. The dark green patches are woods, light green is corn, and yellow is wheat. The building footprints are scaled to the models offered by Buildings In Turmoil. Here's the map:

Thanks

Herr Tavern is on Herr Ridge, which is at least as high as Seminary Ridge. It was used as the main Confederate artillery position firing on the Union 1st Corps on the first day. Pegram planted his artillery battalion there.

Attractive map.

Good point. I still need to add Herr Ridge to the map. Thanks for the feedback.

This is great Bryan as I am trying to put one together for a game to be held soon.

Here's a question; Is McPherson's Ridge steep enough to give a unit "up hill" an advantage in combat (assuming you believe in such things) or to affect movement of a unit ascending it?

Also, would be be possible to get a pdf copy or a copy in a format that I could modify?

Thanks.

One more thing. Is it possible to make the grid lines a darker color? It's hard to see them in the color they are.

i've walked mcphersons ridge mant times. its a slight incline. i play johnny reb 3 and my club is playing the first day.
anyway, its not and advantage to the defenders. and remember, archers men were on top of the redge and drew first blood on the iron brigade…

Ken,
Yes I can make the grid darker. I'm not sure about generating a PDF. Let me look into it.

Herr ridge is a bit higher than McPhersons as I read it.

Nice work. I'd love to see the finished version if there was one. And also curious what program(s) you used?

Thanks,

George
