We're halfway through the year. How well are your projects progressing?

A – I'm ahead of schedule
B – I'm on schedule
C – I'm a bit behind frankly, but might catch up
D – I'm a long way behind and its not looking good
E – A wargames company released something new and shiny when I had specifically asked everyone not to!

Jovian101 Jul 2013 10:29 a.m. PST

C – I am a bit behind, but I have a week off in July which may allow me to catch up on several of them and get them where they should be in anticipation of new projects which are going to be shipping in August and September, which will hopefully get going to a good start so the December and 2014 projects can come in with plenty of time/space in the painting table.

I had planned on another year of no productivity, but I have been a painting machine lately. I am way ahead of my schedule. :-)

Still working on the 2012 projects…late and over budget, they are!

Texas Jack01 Jul 2013 10:58 a.m. PST

In rules writing I´m a big fat D, but in gaming projects I´m a solid B.
That feather you see in my cap came from having my Little Round Top project miraculously finished on time, including some rather spartan terrain.

Frothers Did It And Ran Away01 Jul 2013 11:01 a.m. PST

C with just a one more burst of effort required to finish. But since I started in 2012 you could say it's actually a D but I'm a glass half full kinda guy.

Naturally I am already thinking about what to do next without having finished this one.

One of my 2013 projects is to clear out unfinished projects and I am doing a pretty good job of it so far.

But … I'm not letting it get me down and just enjoying what I do get done. Already played more games than last year, which I sort of see as the point of the hobby !

"D – I'm a long way behind and its not looking good"

Trying to do too many different projects at once, as always.

Im not perturbed though, just plodding ahead a little each week.

Current projects sitting in various states of completion on painting table are:
15mm 1944 German Panzer Grenadiers,
28mm 1939 Germans and Poles,
28mm 1944 Fallschirmjager,
and 28mm 1863 Confederates.

Currently the 1939 Polish project has the most completed minis so far.

A big fat B

bruntonboy01 Jul 2013 12:10 p.m. PST

My projects are still backlogged from the last century in the main..although my 28mm Germans WW2 is finished. (Until I pick up a few extras from the club order next week that is)

Rrobbyrobot01 Jul 2013 12:41 p.m. PST

What is this schedule thing?

Huscarle01 Jul 2013 1:03 p.m. PST

D & E too, oh dear halfway through the year, it's not looking good.

CATenWolde01 Jul 2013 1:10 p.m. PST

10mm ACW = B- (Figures painted and based, but many to grass. Terrain mostly done, but need some work on bits here and there.)

15mm Dux Brit = C (was planning on starting over the summer, but haven't started yet)

This is mostly due to:

28mm Sci-Fi = E (my son had a resurgent interest, so I'm buried under Space Orx and we're learning Gruntz)

Not too bad, actually.

Striker01 Jul 2013 1:11 p.m. PST

A. Clearing out stuff but getting my terrain built up (the big project for the year).

C and B – I didn't get the unpainted minis down to none (OK … just put the pitchforks and torches down) before making my mid year orders (JUN-JUL) of stuff, which I started a bit early, anyway. I should be down to none/nearly none before my end of year orders (which I actually do in January).

Cerdic01 Jul 2013 2:03 p.m. PST

Schedule! You have a schedule?

Schedules are too serious for a hobby. It's supposed to be relaxing!

F – pretty much the same as E, but lack of funds makes the issue a moot one anyway.

Thankfully, there's some stuff already on hand, and way behind in the queue.

David Manley01 Jul 2013 2:59 p.m. PST

Brian Smaller01 Jul 2013 4:37 p.m. PST

Mostly on track. Slowed down a lot in the last month or so – a sort of lethargy overcame me when it came to all things creative.

Syrinx001 Jul 2013 5:29 p.m. PST

Real life eliminate the hobby schedule back in Jan. Trying to get back to painting anything this month. We shall see.

Of course E still holds true.

vojvoda01 Jul 2013 5:46 p.m. PST

D for sure. Most project for this year have been on hold while I was busy applying for new positions within the government. Has taken about four months and I will not even be settled until the end of July.
Project on hold right now for this year:

Punic 28mm Carthage. 120 figures
Zombies in 28mm about 100 figures
Jungle Rot Vietnam in 25mm about 60 figures
Roman 20mm Hat Cavalry about 48 figures
Star Wars Hoth 25mm about 500 figures to do bases for
Star Wars X Wing about 20 more ships to buy
Roman Seas have not even started
several other newer project needed work

All packed and ready to go but will remain in boxes until I get settled. Do not see finishing any of these except for S-Wing this calendar year.

Dead to the last man and I am wondering what the future of the hobby holds for me. Frankly, the costs are going up (not just the minis, but the storage, etc.) to the point where I am seriously rethinking everything I do. Was the in the same boat last year, but it is pretty obvious the hobby might be in its twilight for me and I am not even close to middle-aged yet. Everything simply takes too long and too many resources I do not have any more.

In light of this, I am seriously thinking about selling a large enough portion. For a while it was fun to think about all these grandiose projects, but the reality is, I am unlikely to acheive even a modicum of what I envision.

kallman01 Jul 2013 5:58 p.m. PST

Schedule? There is a schedule? No told me there was a schedule! With grad school there is a schedule which would preclude me having any kind of miniature painting schedule period. However, I am on track to have all things painted for a 15mm Science Fiction game I plan to run at Southern Front. So there. thumbs up

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP01 Jul 2013 6:05 p.m. PST

C for the most part but the Sirens of other periods keep calling.

Timotheous01 Jul 2013 6:39 p.m. PST

Augustus, I feel your pain (is it painful?). I too am looking at all the things I had stored in my closets and realizing how much of what I have held onto will never be done or played with. I don't anticipate leaving miniature wargaming entirely, but I will shed almost all of my Avalon Hill Games, and some mini projects I will never be able to finish.

I think I will enjoy what I keep more if I narrowly define the focus of my hobby, but I have a difficult time deciding what to let go. Sometimes I think I need a Peter Walsh intervention.

Augustus, I wish you the best of luck , and I hope you enjoy whatever you end up doing.

Cheers,
Colin

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut01 Jul 2013 10:33 p.m. PST

I decided last year to just give up on hobby gaming… the amount of time and money put into preparation was not yielding enough actual game time to make it worthwhile.

So I think I have pulled out the paints a couple of times from January through May, putting maybe a single color on a group of 15mm Quar or K'kree. But then I was going through the shed and found my Wargods stuff a few weeks ago…

I am about hlfway through a unit of 10 Basti Archers. I will probably be done with them by the weekend. I have more Wargods stuff I want to paint. I think I will be significantly ahead of the "I am done with this hobby" schedule in no time at all!

Meiczyslaw01 Jul 2013 10:48 p.m. PST

C. I'm about ready to start a run of my spaceship game, but I'm also going to be travelling two of the next five weeks.

Soon, my fleets will have rules worthy of them!

… And then I start on the RPG that's building from the backstory of the minis game. I think I'm officially insane.

Thomas Nissvik02 Jul 2013 3:04 a.m. PST

C and E. I had plans to paint a bunch of German armour in winter colours, but along came the Guild with the Fall of the Reich group build. No winter colours, but tanks are being painted.
E. I am looking at you, Red Star Miniatures!( link )

artaxerxes02 Jul 2013 3:18 a.m. PST

I just acquired a very nice Russian Civil War Red army in 15mm. I'd been thinking about this for a couple of years, but hadn't moved on it. I have the makings of a White army and have ordered the extras for supporting Interventionist forces for North Russia, so GAME ON. Mind you, the 7YW Russians will now have to take a ticket, as will the five Napoleonic armies and, and, and. sigh

OSchmidt02 Jul 2013 4:02 a.m. PST

A I am way ahead on the After Action Report/Keepsake Booklet for "The Weekend" Convention just closed a week ago and I am extremely far ahead on the material for the Weekend next year.

A Nade some significant striedes in completing several regiments.

A Have the next two years of Saxe N' Violets newsletters completed and printed and working on year three (2015) Been doing this for 7 years already and quite proud of the publication.

A few spanners in the works :
Well I got my Lutzen refight on the table in time for the anniversary but I then lost enthusiasm for doing the rest of the camapign (though am still painting the odd Austrain for Dresden)Spanner 1.
The guy I used to play Wrahmmer with years ago came back from Italy and rekindled my long dead interest in fantasy – (spanner number 2)
New rules that we decided would work best with 10mm Marlburians led to a revival of that long abandoned project (spanner number 3)
Arrival of new figures in model shop led to painting of the odd 54mm Napoleonic and some Perry AWI. (spanner 4)
Am going back to university in August so that will eat into painting time (spanner 5)
