Just discovered these books, albeit 40+ years after they were first published. Excellent historical fiction, far superior to much of what is being published today. So far I have found 2 books covering the Indian Mutiny ("..on Delhi Ridge", "Blood of an Englishman", "
and the Summer Palace" (China 1840s), "
and the Mad Emperor" (Abysinnian Expedition) and "The Tune they Play" (Zulu War) He also wrote an account of 'Fighting Mac' (Hector McDonald) but this seems hard to get hold of (and is it any good?) Are there any others by the same author? |

Dando and the Mad Emperor only ever appeared in hardback. Secondhand copies fetch phenomenal sums on the secondhand market. I enjoyed reading '
Delhi Ridge' and '..the Summer Palace' back in my schooldays and 'Tune That They Played'is an excellent tale about Isandhlwana. Under his real name, Ronald Bassett wrote a number of other historical novels including 'The Witchfinder General' which formed the basis for the film. |

I believe that the ones you have listed are the ones he has written. I don't know of any others. |

I just picked up a copy of 'The Tune That They Played' at a garage sale for $0.25 USD. I found this thread while researching the autor since I'd never heard of "William Clive" before. "Dando and the Mad Emperor only ever appeared in hardback. Secondhand copies fetch phenomenal sums on the secondhand market." Found Dando and the Mad Emperor through a couple online dealers rather cheaply. Paperback – $2.23 USD USD Hardback, without dust jacket, in near mint condition – $4.74 USD USD. |
