Hi guys. Don't know if any of you have played The Last of Us, but it deals with the zombie apocalypse in a unique way (the zombies are caused by an evolved strain of the Cordyceps parasitic fungus). I'm looking for some figures to represent the main characters, Ellie and Joel. Anyone got any recommendations?
I think the zombies themselves are pretty easy to handle, the early stages of infection can be represented by normal zombies figures, and the later stages could probably have some fungal growths sculpted onto them.
Cheers! |

You might want to have a look at some of our survivors to see if you think anything's suitable:

A few of those looks very good indeed. Top left would be spot on for Joel I think. Only problem is, I'm in the UK, and I heard the shipping rates from the US have gone a bit crazy recently? |

I'd suggest the right side, 3rd down. Although he looks like Shane from TWD, he would fit in a bit more I think (op left in a police uniform wouldn't do) I'd also go with top middle with some green stuff added for longer hair to make Ellie. None of the others are the right height or are dressed appropriately. I'm watching Ghostsrobo's series of game plays on YouTube for this game. It looks immense. I hope you enjoyed/are enjoying it, there's so much depth to the game, thumbs up! Ark3n |

@OctaChaz You can check Khurasans shipping costs out in their shopping cart. It should only be $8 USD – $12 USD International (I am in Australia) for a few dozen minis. The other day I was thinking about how "Desiree Kim" from Khurasan would make a good grown up ellie, but I can't think of any mini that would do for a young version.

@Ark3nubis Yeah, your suggestions make more sense. Its pretty troublesome trying to find a figure to represent a 14 year old. Everything is either adult-sized or a lot younger. I completed the game yesterday, one of the best and most emotional I've ever played. @theRaptor Cheers, that postage is not too shabby. Agree that fig would make a good grown-up Ellie. As I said before though, struggling to find decent early-teen size figures. |

Actually that's an excellent idea -- on the list! Perhaps a tween girl and boy, one each with rifle and bow. The bow armed girl would be especially pertinent! |

I don't think you will find anything bang on but there are males with handguns and a female with a handgun in the Khurasan Miniatures range:
the lag makes me way to late to this party

@khurasanminiatures Bow armed tween would work!

Jaizus that's an eye wateringly good bit of both sculpting and painting. I'll get my coat

I think the book version of the "bow armed female" is definitely better -- scrawny and not too tall. Not the full-on hottie adult woman version that was in the film! |

the zombies are caused by an evolved strain of the Cordyceps parasitic fungus Okay, I'm not familiar with this concept of an infection, do they still spread the infection by bitting or by spores? |
OctaChaz | 28 Jun 2013 7:41 a.m. PST |
@War Monkey The fungus is spread by both biting and through spores – there a few sections where the characters have to wear gas masks to pass through areas with lots of the fungi. |

I dunno. Seems like the parasitic infection started with the Egyptians and has spread considerably in the West
Toxoplasma is scary (and worse than the Futurama brain slugs): "A common parasite in cats can infect humans. The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii feeds on human brain cells, causing altered mental states, behavioral problems and schizophrenia. According to the CDC, up to 60 million people in America suffer from toxoplasmosis, and most don't know it. Although T. gondii is a microscopic organism, it seems to influence the mind and behavior of its host. By manipulating the reward and pleasure centers of the brain, the parasite can ensure its own survival." link "Changes in Human Personality and Behavior A study at Charles University in Prague found that men infected with toxoplasmosis were more jealous or suspicious than the men of a control group. Women, on the other hand, became more friendly and outgoing. Both sexes had stronger feelings of guilt, and showed more self-reproach, than did those in the control group. The same study found that people with toxoplasmosis had delayed reaction times. An infected person was four to six times more likely to have a traffic accident than a non-infected person." link Dan TMP link |

Oh that sounds Great! Is there a link or page to where one can get the rules for this! |
OctaChaz | 28 Jun 2013 10:18 a.m. PST |
@War Monkey Its a video game for the PS3, no rules I'm afraid! Just interested in gaming it on the tabletop. |

"the later stages could probably have some fungal growths sculpted onto them." You should watch the x-files episode "Firewalker", specially the scene where Shawnee Smith has one of those things explode out of her neck. Dan |

Dan, Thanks for the toxoplasma link, I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight. |

As a weird thought, Khurasan has these guys, the Vornids:
With a little work, they could be useful for infected at the extreme end of the infection, and they come with flower-like add-ons (especially in the command pack) that could be grafted onto regular zombies to make advanced infected ("clickers," I think they're called -- but I haven't played the game). Or just saw the head off a Vornid and do a head swap with a zombie :) |
OctaChaz | 29 Jun 2013 4:01 a.m. PST |
That's not a bad idea actually. The flower bits would make great additions to make clickers, yeah. |

Just realised I haven't posted any pictures up of the fungus infected zombies for those who haven't seen the game:

Yeah a head swap cut-n-shut with some zeds and those would look cool, or again, use greenstuff too. Yeah I've got to the last in Ghostrobo's 42 piece gameplay series on YouTube and have the final 45mins to go, really enjoyed it, almost like having a free zombie film, and the story has been excellent too, so good! |
OctaChaz | 29 Jun 2013 10:33 a.m. PST |
Have fun with the ending, haven't got it out of my head since I finished it! |
War Monkey | 29 Jun 2013 6:25 p.m. PST |
Okay, it's base on a video game, got it. So what rule system are you planning to use to move on with this project? How do you know when your entering a "spore zone"? Looking at the pictures posted above I'm guessing a good smack in the head will not kill them and guessing it's just another good way to spread the spores for it would just "POP" their heads open. Okay I'm very intrested and really want to know, please tell me more, tell me more!! |
