"The French campaign of 1809 profoundly affected the Hungarian collective consciousness. It reached its height at the time of the Battle of Győr (Raab), on June 14, 1809, which ended with the victory of the French army in Italy commanded by Viceroy Eugène in the face of troops raised by the Hungarian nobles and imperial and royal forces under the command of Archduke John. The defeat of Győr, and the withdrawal of Archduke John, also had a significant effect on the events of the main theater of operations, for Napoleon was able to assemble his troops before the decisive battle of Wagram. Besides presenting the events of the 1809 campaign, the study also outlines the role of Hungarians in the Imperial and Royal Army as well as the noble duty to raise troops, a duty called "noble insurrection"
