48 Nodules per Dalek. 60 Daleks to paint. Total Nodules 2880.
Started painting the first one, then had one of those eureka moments.

Looks like it helps with uniformity of the nodules, too. You'd never get that with a brush.

I can't imagine ever wanting to paint a Dalek but nevertheless take great pleasure in seeing innovative and successful wheezes such as this.

Good work, Sir…….!

Beauty!

Gokiburi17 Jun 2013 8:49 p.m. PST

Efficient and effective.
I'll definitely borrow that method once I have some Daleks of my own.

I've painted dozens of Daleks. Thousands of hemispheres. WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THIS?!?!?!?!? Gahhhhhhh!!! So brilliantly simple! It shouldn't be allowed to work!

Just had to find one that fit nicely over the bumps. Had some left over tubing from some things I had sculpt, luckily one of them fit. But given the variety of Dalek models out there you will have to experiment yourself to find the right fit.

That was the best thing, this method was not only quicker but as you say I got a much more even finish.

What do they say, "Necessity is the mother of invention". Believe me this invention was Necessary :)

I shall give one a go. Thanks

Oh that's a nice idea -- I've been looking at all these medieval figures with studs visible on their armoured jackets, dreading painting them, and this might work for those as well!!!

tkdguy18 Jun 2013 5:50 p.m. PST

Good idea!

Smart, very, very smart. One of the best ideas I've seen.

Have to remember that trick!!

Clever – I like that a lot

Failure1620 Jun 2013 10:51 a.m. PST

Excellent idea!

I did something vaguely similarish with a cotton-swab for putting wheel-hubs on 6mm models that do not have them (such as Brigade Models' SAC line). If it works, use it!

pretty bloody clever

I was just thinking about the same technique for eyes.

foggybottom31 Oct 2013 9:50 p.m. PST

where did you get the great Dalek minis?

monash191607 Nov 2013 12:07 a.m. PST

I was also curious where they came from. But I presume they are from BTD.

No Such Agency03 Feb 2014 12:37 p.m. PST

They look more like the plastic new style Daleks that are floating around these days. (60 BTD Daleks is a lot of money, about 220 bucks by my calculations :0

Oddball27 Feb 2014 7:49 p.m. PST

Thank you for sharing, great idea!

I'm only painting up 10 and wasn't looking forward to it.

Fizzypickles28 Feb 2014 7:55 a.m. PST

Brilliant! Love these 'Eureka' moments.

Now, to find me a tube that will paint tartan……

BrianH04 May 2014 9:54 a.m. PST

I just tried this with some Black Tree (formerly Harlequin) 28mm scale metal Daleks, using Humbrol enamel #86 satin black with a 1/8 brass tube. The paint has a tendency to run and there will be a lot of touching up to do as it flowed beyond the bumps. Some paints may work better than other for this. Perhaps acrylics would work better? What type of paint were you using Germy?

BrianH04 May 2014 4:39 p.m. PST

Further to my last message for the Harlequin / BTD Daleks I find the 1/8 brass tube works well with GW Abaddon Black the thicker paint does not run.

I really wish Id seen this video before I painted 60+ daleks…
