Hadn't heard about the SCAD, so that is interesting to add in to the mix.

Perusing some old SAC documents though, I did run across a system similar to the Quail, which was called Goose, and was a ground launched decoy, with performance similar to that of the Quail, but with a 5,000 mile range.

A brilliant cover name, by the way, since few would question anything if goose and decoy were used in the same sentence, due to a slip of the tongue.

Apparently, they would have been launched from the continental US, if our bombers had needed to penetrate Soviet, or Chinese airspace to complete their missions.

Looks like, from this site, that it was cancelled, before being deployed, and was replaced by the SNARK (essentially a very long range cruise missile), which could carry a nuclear warhead:

Gotta love this quote about the SNARK:

"The number of Snarks crashing in the ocean led to warnings about 'Snark infested waters' ".
