Well, we finally had a chance to play an 80AP vs 80AP game tonight. My younger son Robby and I vs my eldest son Sean and his girlfriend. I took the Rangers and Robby the Undead. Sean had his newly painted Dark Elves and she took her Lizardman army. I was setup opposite Sean's Dark Elves. Robby vs the Lizards. All leaders had Tactician.

Both armies of Lizards and DE had artillery, Spellcaster, HI, LI w/polearms, Hydra for the DE and archers.

Army of the Dead
Giant Bone Monster
Lord & Master-Spellcaster
Archer Shoot II x6
HI x2
LI w/polearms x2

Rangers of the North
General
Spellcaster
Archers Shoot II x5
Ents x2 Monstrous
Artillery

There were 3 sections of woods and one of hills. The board with the Undead and Lizards had the hill and wood touching in the middle of the board. The other board had a woods section in the rear portion of the board opposite from each other.

I can't recap the game. Too much action. DE vs Rangers got nasty quickly. Both generals survived some spells and artillery fire. The Rangers took and edge with eliminating artillery, bows and some HI while only losing an artillery unit. The big battlegroup of Hydra, Spellcaster, 2x HI with LI w/polearm support vs my General and 2x Ents. I lost and fell back (nothing killed). The DE had used a Shroud of Darkness which helped. However, that Group was then hit from the flank by n Undead archer unit causing a HI loss.

The Undead Army moved up and was shot up both by Lizard bows and artillery. While killing a few Bow units resulted their Lord and Master was destroyed. They quickly fell apart.

The DE climax happened when their repeated attacks were repulsed with minimal loss for the Rangers. They lost their General and had suffered enough losses to withdraw. This left the Rangers vs Lizardmen finale.

Both armies had suffered minimal losses. The Rangers got Initiative rolled 5 MP's and proceeded to kill their artillery and Spellcaster. The Rangers were far enough away and had a Spellcaster that we decided to call it. Being able to bind and blast with 5 archer units remaining meant a nasty firing line awaited the Lizards. Plus, it was late and my eldest and his girlfriend had to get up early. While not a decisive defeat of the Lizards I calculate that the Rangers did have a decisive edge with so much archery and a Spellcaster along with 5 moves distance between them.

Archery and artillery still prove to be highly lethal. I'm still not sure I am sold on this.

I believe there should be a lesser class of Spellcaster. Certain armies would surely contain more than a single one. Perhaps they provide Magic support?

Sorry, no pics.

*****Question

Does Shroud of Darkness provide all around protection from Missile fire?

Does Shroud of Darkness still allow a DE Spellcater to cast other spells requiring LOS? We decided he could not do it with an active Shroud.

A Battlegroup has taken losses from archers previously. The Monster is now alone along with two stands of HI. All of these contact the enemy Battlegroup in Close Combat. Should there points be added together in the combat vs the enemy? Based on the example in the rules we ruled they were added together.

Polearms only gives the unit a +1 while in a supporting position?

Dark Elf spells are only used by DE?

It's late. That's all I can think of right now.

Thanks,

John

That game sounded fun. I like big battles!

Does Shroud of Darkness provide all around protection from Missile fire?

Yes. Missile, Magic and Arty. It is basically a great big Save :)

We allow the caster to cast LOS spells. The DE see better in the darkness, that is why we allow it. I use SD with my Dark Elves a lot… It is very powerful. When Jason uses it.. I just hang back and toss ranged shots into the darkness :)

Yes.

+1 to support score. So if normal score is 2.. now it is a 3.

The only real Spell that the DE have that works for them exclusively is Shroud because the spell says they have the eyes to see through it. It might work for Dwarves as well, but we have not addressed it. If you want to use any of these spells for other races, I say just do it :)

Have you tried just including a second spellcaster? I don't see it as being too disruptive.

Problem is you still only get a single D6 to cast magic and spellcasters are not cheap.

I think perhaps you need to get D6+? when adding an extra spellcaster. Or the extra spellcaster adds to the potency of the 1st.

When we play multiple divisions, I always have a caster in each division. That way if one division is coming from the side of the table, they have magic support..
