Jim at Polemarch has very kindly said that I can post these preview pictures of his new scythed chariots, which I gather will very soon (but not quite yet) be available through Gripping Beast. They have a gratifying number of pointy bits and sharp edges! Very nice, I reckon.

Cheers, Simon

Ps These what you have been after, Mike?

Holy crap that is vicious and cool!

ashill213 Jun 2013 10:24 a.m. PST

Way cool!

seleucus13 Jun 2013 10:32 a.m. PST

The chariot just got added to the Gripping Beast website. Time for everyone to satisfy their long lost desire to field a Pontic Army with imitation legionaries and scythed chariots! OK, maybe it was just me wanting to release my inner Mithridates…

I have two from 1st corps painted and in the army, one from Newline waiting to be assembled, but I can probably justify another………..

That's very nice indeed!

colin knight13 Jun 2013 1:35 p.m. PST

Great. Must have model I reckon.

Roderick Robertson Fezian13 Jun 2013 2:03 p.m. PST

Just mount skullz where the roundels are on the horse's tack. That'll make 'em better. And paint 'em red, 'cause it goes fasta!

People are complaining about the spikey bitz on Crocodile Games' Ares figure, but not these?

grin

Simon, yes that is one of the items I have been waiting for !!!!! Thanks and Cheers Mike

JJartist14 Jun 2013 7:32 a.m. PST

looks very solid!! A must have for my Seleucids….

mgdavey14 Jun 2013 10:55 a.m. PST

Which armies is this suitable for? Would it work for Mithradates' Pontic?

Locknar14 Jun 2013 11:28 a.m. PST

Yes!

JJartist14 Jun 2013 5:10 p.m. PST

These will work for Seleucid and Pontic for either, and just swap a Persian head or helmet for the lower one.

Mithridates14 Jun 2013 10:18 p.m. PST

These do look good – how does one flog a fully armoured horse BTW?

Will also work for Darius against those nasty Macedonians.

VERY carefully!!!!!!!!!! Mike P.S. Hi Simon

JJartist15 Jun 2013 11:57 a.m. PST

I have never whipped a horse with a bullwhip… but I reckon only a horse hater would ever actually hit his horse and rip flesh off like some British Navy First Mate would to somebody who stole some apples….. I reckon that all one needs to do is crack the whip near the horse to get them to jump. When the Circus used to be real (and not on stage) I never saw one of those burly trainers ever actually hit a horse or beast with a whip… in fact I heard of it once in Tarzana and it closed down the institution when the lion bit the head off the owner… of course we have all these visions of Ben Hur and mad cap whipping of those horses that are millions of times more valuable than the expendable driver… I reckon if a driver drew blood of a valuable horse they would use his head for scythed blade sharpening practice….

…although in this case the valuable horse is on something of a suicide mission! :-)

JJartist15 Jun 2013 2:34 p.m. PST

I think suicide mission is over stated mythology by rules systems. However something has to give…. they are too cool to be really effective, and yet they are not effective, but so cool.. I want them but they are so lousy… I reckon they are the most spectacular lousy troop type ever.

Mithridates15 Jun 2013 3:22 p.m. PST

They have worked well in Hail Caesar against heavy cavalry but only in 'groups' of at least 2. They will die themselves but usually kill their opposition. A single chariot on its own dies uselessly.

At Chaeonea they were so ineffective that the Romans applauded, and shouted "send us some more!" :-)

The trouble with them, as far as I can see, that if the enemy didn't run away, as they approached, the chariot driver had a quick decision to make between death and flight (and generally chose the latter!).

Cheers, Simon

Does anyone have any good examples or inform on how to paint these? Thanks, Mike Aams

I don't think you'll find any info on colour Mike, but I have some ideas about reins and the scythes, I'll mail you. IIRC it mentions on the GB site they are painting up some, so that might help.

Cheers, Simon

Thanks JJ, top pic shows the position scythes well; the ones on the end of the Polemarch yoke are clearly intended to be bent into position. An interesting arrangement with the reins…

Is the bottom pic the 1stCorps? It doesn't have many scythes but is a tidy model.

Cheers, SImon
