what we can see here, but not hear here is Smaug himself. There's a glimpse of the eponymous dragon at the end of the trailer but no sound from the (everywhere all the time) actor playing him: Benedict Cumberbatch. Not that audiences don't already know what he sounds like—his "shall we begin?" from Star Trek Into Darkness is still booming through theaters—but of the things fans are anticipating in Smaug at the top of the list is, well, Smaug. Of course the big Cumberbatch reveal isn't going to come with the first trailer, but it would've been nice. This new trailer and images also trumpets the return of Orlando Bloom as Legolas, and quite a bit of the gang from the last Hobbit flick: Bilbo (Martin Freeman), who is apparently exercising every opportunity to frolic and look scared in this trailer, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), and Gandalf (Ian McKellen). And, overall, the trailer promises an action-packed ride, which would be a relief after An Unexpected Journey‘s, um, slower moments. Will it be better than its predecessor? Or will it just leave fans with their own desolation? We'll have to wait and see." Full article and video here. link

Yes, it appears to diverge from the original story. No, I don't care! |

I pretty much don't like a single thing I see in that trailer. Any hope I had that Part II would be more in line with the book than was Part I has pretty much been dashed. That's my story and I'm stickin to it. |

Come on, guys, we get a Red-haired Ninja Elf Chick! It's gotta be great, right? Right????? So, the entire third movie will be filler on the Necromancer, and the Battle of Five Armies? Holding breath I am not. |

Anyone else remember Legolas having brown eyes before? |
nazrat | 12 Jun 2013 5:11 a.m. PST |
They were blue in the trailer I just watched. Where were they brown? I liked what I saw and didn't see all that much that "diverged" from the book. The Gandolph stuff is new, but we were all aware that they would be showing all the backstory that Tolkien mentions along the way. The elves gadding about and killing stuff is to give a bit more action to the story, which most theater audiences seem to want. This was never made for the purists

Legolas ONCE AGAIN balking at the fight that lays before him? Somebody needs to take away his shield, strip his daddy's sword from him, and make him cry! Oh wait, that was Troy

@nazrat What I meant was that Legolas had brown eyes in the LOTR films, and I was asking if anyone else remembered that as well, or if I had been mistaken. poorly worded post, I suppose. |

Ah, I get it, Parth! I assumed he DID have blue eyes in the first trilogy. I never looked all that closely, I guess. |

as per Thosmoss's post or Heaven's Gate or Pirates of the Carribean Bloom excels as the reluctant hero type |
