I am in the process of producing a range of figures for the Franco Prussian War, I am starting with the French, with line, Turcos, Zouaves and Guard (in bearskins and bonnet de police).
I am aiming to release the first of the figures at Colours this year.

Why not alternate French line with Prussian Line, then lights, then guard, then Cavalry/ Artillery. Do both sides as close together as possible. Nothing so irritates many gamers as getting one side of a war and waiting for the other one to come out.

People can do skirmish games with small numbers of foot and then progress to bigger games as more figure come available.

Consider Partisan and irregulars so as to allow games of the Paris Commune. This is something I have wanted to do.

Thanks for the heads up.

Skygalleons09 Jun 2013 12:19 p.m. PST

Thanks – I have 10 greens done already, and after Colours I will do some Prussian and Allied Line – then alternate – thanks for the idea

Skygalleons09 Jun 2013 12:21 p.m. PST

also, if you would like a sample, just email me

nickinsomerset09 Jun 2013 12:56 p.m. PST

The French might be interesting, but I am a little full up! Perhaps some of the minor German states who formed the odd contingents, I would love some Brunswickers!

Tally Ho!

Marslatour09 Jun 2013 2:30 p.m. PST

Looking forward to these, will they be compatible with Foundry's range or North Star's 1866 range or somewhere in-between?

Plus, where do we email you?

Cheers

kevin smoot09 Jun 2013 3:00 p.m. PST

can you mail samples to the US?

Dr Mathias Fezian09 Jun 2013 4:03 p.m. PST

Prussian hussar kettle drummer

I thought I was the only person in the world that wanted one of these.

Dave Gamer09 Jun 2013 8:00 p.m. PST

Yes – I too would like to know if they will be compatible with Foundry as it's currently the most complete 28mm 1870 line out there (compatible meaning I can mix Foundry and your figures in the same unit and they wouldn't look out of place).

MikeMartin09 Jun 2013 8:52 p.m. PST

Add me to the list of people who would buy if Foundry compatible.

Michael

Skygalleons10 Jun 2013 3:47 a.m. PST

If you have a look at my website heroesofthedarkage.com – there is a section there on the releases – also pictures of the greens – the two Guards are slightly incorrect and will be refined – the sword if off – just the bayonet scabbard.
You can email me through heroesofthedarkage@yahoo.co.uk – once I have them back from the casters, I will post off some samples – will send where ever.
Also I would appreciate all feedback, good and bad – this is a period that I have always wanted to do, and though it will take time, want to do as complete as possible.
The figures stand 28mm foot to eye, so maybe slightly bigger than Foundry

Skygalleons10 Jun 2013 3:49 a.m. PST

I have the usual reference books – osprey etc and links on the net, any other references would be useful

mashrewba10 Jun 2013 10:47 a.m. PST

Well I'm going to be getting some of these too-they look good.
Bognars comments about irregulars etc are spot on-this,for me, is the most interesting part of the conflict with lots of small actions. My armies are based on this period.
All my stuff is Foundry or Battle Honors -Nortstar is a great line but I haven't bought any as they are huge so I would say there are a lot of people with Foundry armies lurking around out there.
If you would like suggestions(!!) I'd be excited by firing line types -especially knelling and crouching types loading/firing and ragged troops for the Republican period.

Skygalleons10 Jun 2013 11:29 a.m. PST

again, email me with your address and I will send you a couple of samples when they are cast.
Once I get the 'basics' done, I will be looking at the other, smaller units

mashrewba10 Jun 2013 11:42 a.m. PST

I'd like too see some tirailleurs annamite too but they weren't around for the Franco Prussian War.
And thanks Skygalleon -I will send you my address-that would be very kind of you.
It's probably worth saying that while there are lots of Zouaves out there they are generally ACW and not quite right (wrong back packs, canteens and muzzle loading weapons).
I love the Guard figs -they didn't wear the bearskin in action but that will not stop me buying them.
Good luck with your venture and apologies for the anorak remarks!!!

nickinsomerset10 Jun 2013 12:16 p.m. PST

My gang are a mix of Foundry old Helion and "new Helion" with a smattering of Battle Honours and Ironclad which are perfect for Meckleburg. For the perfectionist the New Helion/North Star are in the 1866 pattern helmet.

Having seen the website they look superb, I may have to add a few more figs!

Tally Ho!

Skygalleons10 Jun 2013 12:32 p.m. PST

got the last two photos, should be on the site in a day or two, one Guardsman firing and one officer.
I am sending them up to be cast this week, so should (hopefully) have them back within a couple of weeks – I will then send some out to anyone who is interested.

mashrewba10 Jun 2013 12:40 p.m. PST

I've got some old Helion Prussians -I love them-I wish I could get hold of their Austrians. The new Austrians now they really are huge!!

BakerCompany10 Jun 2013 2:43 p.m. PST

Looking good – keep telling myself "I don't need to start another period", but then things like this crop up… ;-)

nickinsomerset11 Jun 2013 8:12 a.m. PST

If you want I could paint up a couple and compare with some of my modest collection,

Tally Ho!

Skygalleons11 Jun 2013 8:34 a.m. PST

Sounds a good idea, I will send some figures to you

Dr Mathias Fezian11 Jun 2013 10:47 a.m. PST

The figures look good!!! I'd echo some of the others and do the things nobody makes yet, and make them compatible with the most popular extant ranges.

MikeMartin11 Jun 2013 1:10 p.m. PST

I just measured a number of my foundry figures which are 26-27mm foot to eye generally, so at 28mm these should be close enough. :-)

Skygalleons15 Jun 2013 3:10 a.m. PST

Just got the 'greens' this morning, the only size comparison I have are the Perry's figures (who I think did the original FPW) – I have their plastic and metal war of the roses and Napoleonic figures – they match the height of these, so should be compatible with most ranges.
These are going up to the casters on Monday, so I should have the figures back in a couple of weeks to send out samples.
Thank you for all of your comments, ideas and resource material

Skygalleons25 Jun 2013 10:09 a.m. PST

Have received the casts back, I will send out samples over the next couple of days – if anyone else would like a sample, then please email me.
The next figures will be command for the Guard, Turcos, Zouaves and Line – these will (hopefully) be done by Devizes – mid July. We will then do Prussian, Bavarian and Wurttemburg infantry and command, then go back to do the cavalry for both sides – we are aiming to get these done by Christmas.

mashrewba26 Jun 2013 10:36 a.m. PST

Make sure your cavalry ranges are mainly casualty figures!!!!
Are these sculpted by the same person that did the Outpost Russo Turkish War range?

Skygalleons26 Jun 2013 12:02 p.m. PST

the sculptor is Martin Baker – he has done work for various companies – he also did my dark age and adventurer ranges – we will also do casualty figures for the cavalry.

mashrewba01 Jul 2013 2:47 a.m. PST

Hey I got my samples this morning -thanks very much.
Very nice figures -bigger than Foundry but you could mix a few in as tall blokes. Probably better in their own units but certainly can be on the table in the same army together. They look good against the Northstar Prussians

nickinsomerset01 Jul 2013 7:42 a.m. PST

Arrived today, undercoated and ready to go. Will paint and photograph with some others over the next couple of days! Very nice figures.

Tally Ho!

Skygalleons01 Jul 2013 8:08 a.m. PST

Thanks for the feedback, just getting command done and a couple of other variants – these should be done for Devizes (mid July), again, if anyone wants samples of these, let me know.
The following release will be head swops for the Guard and Turcos (bonnet de police for Guard, and fez for the others)this will be done for Colours (September), then the plan will be for Prussia and Allies basic foot.
We are going to look at selling the figures individually, packs of 4 and unit packs (with command).
So, foot, £1.25 GBP each, pack of 4 £5.00 GBP and unit pack of 24 £28.00 GBP

nickinsomerset02 Jul 2013 7:38 a.m. PST

Phots done and on Photobucket, link sent to heroesofthe darkages,

Tally Ho!

Tricorne197108 Jul 2013 8:31 p.m. PST

A few notes:
Mirliton makes the French Guard Command in Bearskins.
I made Wurtemburg artillery using Austrians (Battle Honors)by cutting down the shako to a cap.
Suren makes Bavarian Jaegers and a Bismark, as well as a great set of dismounted Kaiser and generals (albeit WWI) in dress uniforms.
I use the old Frontier Miniatures Spahis.

Chasseur a pied de la garde is an absolute must!

Years ago, one of our local gamers, Mitch Allen, did an entire army of 1866 Hanoverians using conversions of Foundry FP War and Hinchliffe Napoleonics.

Skygalleons09 Jul 2013 6:40 a.m. PST

We will have the command done for the Guard, Line and Zouaves by Devizes (20th July), and will be available from the show/website- also, by this weekend, the first 10 figures will be available through the website.
The whole range, as it comes out, will be stocked by Colonel Bill at most of the UK shows

Skygalleons12 Jul 2013 3:08 a.m. PST

I now have the command done, just waiting for them to be cast, will then put some pictures on the website and send out samples to those who would like them.

nickinsomerset12 Jul 2013 9:16 a.m. PST

I would love some more samples, but will now be away for a couple of months!!

Tally Ho!

Beaumap26 Nov 2013 2:47 p.m. PST

Pity they are so large. Like Mutineer and several others, they will fail to seriously challenge semi-comprehensive and attractive existing ranges by offering almost as good figures that are just a lot bigger! Meanwhile we still lack Hanoverians etc

At least Skygalleons doesn't have both a Foundry AND Old Glory wind against him. Prices seem fair too.

By the way Tricorne1971 – thanks for the tips.

Skygalleons27 Nov 2013 4:24 p.m. PST

Again, if anyone would like samples, then please let me know, at present we are doing the first of our French cavalry, Bavarian line and another three infantry packs, one each for guard,Zouave and line. We do aim to have as an extensive range as possible over the next year

Leadjunky30 Nov 2013 7:31 p.m. PST

When do you anticipate a release of mounted generals? As you may know there are hardly any available for either army.

Skygalleons01 Dec 2013 2:59 a.m. PST

We are looking at getting the mounted generals finished by late February – starting with Prussian and French

Leadjunky01 Dec 2013 7:02 p.m. PST

Thanks. Looking forward to seeing them.

Skygalleons09 Dec 2013 3:24 p.m. PST

Pictures of the first green of the cavalry and also a Bavarian commander are now on my blog, for those interested

mashrewba11 Dec 2013 11:36 a.m. PST

Good stuff -got a link?

This thread is being torn the typical two ways:
1. requests for incredibly obscure, non-commercial oddities. Any producer with any sense must ignore these for commercial reasons.
2. input from period buffs, who by definition already have at least 2 armies, and probably whole collections. Only the most addicted will buy more of the same.

Why oh why cant we have a third way?
3. a producer willing to give us what ALL lack:
- Bavarian and Wurtemburger mounted command
- Wurtemburg and minor states artillery
- Prussian ally cavalry
- ANY Federal German troops in a modern style. The latter would give meaningful sales volume. Since the yardstick (like it or not) is Foundry, a premium could even be charged for decent sculpts(not therefore Martin Baker)

BOTH groups would buy the above. I, for one, would even abandon my non-negotiable Foundry compatibility for these.

If, say, there are 3,000 buffs out there, ALL would eventually buy from option 3. Few will buy rather static looking re-treads of existing forces, leaving only newbies to buy this range. Apparently, the recent Wargames Illustrated on the FPW produced a surge of business for – guess who – Foundry. When I was in their shop last month; almost all FPW hangers were empty. They said that the hordes and collections had flown out of the door too.
