Still Need:

Real, Force Publique style askaris- Maybe a sculpt or two from Blue Moon might work, but no natives, in coats, pantaloons, bare feet and fez. :(

Ashantis- One Irreglar sculpt, otherwise, its semi adequate zulus with firearms and such. Need musket carrying Ashantis bad!

basic musket armed natives, rugga rugga. Some Blue Moon sculpts,

Blowgun and bow equipped bushmen/natives

For Baluchis and Arab slavers, QRF and Thouroughbred Barbary Pirates work well. I think Minifigs has 15mm Barabary too. Also, many ancients lines of Arabs work for generic melee arab/africans.

A proxy for Force Publique-like askaris may be the following:

NC133 Colonial/WW1 Askari in shorts,standing with rifle

Also, for nativs and ruga ruga, I would consider:

FZ133 Bornu African Musketman in long robe

I find that the Irregular range includes a lot of interesting and useful miniatures, but it is often neglected by wargamers. I've always been very pleased by these miniatures (much better than they show in the website pictures.) Available in the US via Silver Eagle Wargame Supply, which always offers top notch service.

Not able to help with many of your needs. But I found that Old Glory 15's Ancients line have some bowmen that will work. I think they're listed as Nubians.

Yeah, that irregular 133 is on my list. Like him.

Many ancients will work for melee guys. With the extensive Blue Moon lines, don't know why they left Ashantis, Force Publique out ?

Also QRF Seminoles might work as Ashantis (looking at some now I did for Seminole War)

I'm really looking at those Blue Moon Foreign Legion Arabs for my next purchase:

I am not familiar with the QRF barbary arabs, and I cannot find them on the website – do you have a specific link to these figures? Thanks!

What about 15mm pygmies? What are they, like 6mm actual height?

tsofian08 Jun 2013 1:29 p.m. PST

Blue Moon makes 15mm Pygmies

Used GW paintable liquid green stuff on a OG Zulu with firearm. Just gave him a pair of baggy pants. Might just work for a close Ashanti, have to wait and see when painted

So, what are folks using for 15mm Arab slavers and such? I'm using Thouroughbred Barbary Pirates?

Gonna order up some Blue Moon askaris as well.

Deso, can't remember which QRF Arabs, but they are ancients, one set with simple hand weapons and the other with spears and swords.

Smokey Roan11 Jun 2013 12:31 p.m. PST

BTW, you get good Arab slaver/Mahdist gun crews in the above set.

For Arabs and Baluchis, why not use ERM's range of… Arabs and Baluchis? Some of them are down-sized versions of the Foundry 28s.

efredbar12 Jun 2013 7:11 p.m. PST

I was so ticked off that Blue Moon didn't make Force Publique or British generic African Askari…I sold off the the figures I had painted (Azande, Hunters and some Rebel Bearers).

A little rash maybe but, dang y'all…I didn't need Tarzan I needed Askari and Ruga.

They're excellent little figures though.

Smokey Roan13 Jun 2013 7:25 a.m. PST

Well, the Blue Moon Askari set does have two sculpts that would work for generic FP or British Askaris, the other three sculpts make good Ruga, mercenaries or Arab slavers.

So, 30 figures, you get ten askaris and 20 slavers/thugs.

efred, seems rash to quit Darkest Africa in 15mm just because of no Force Publique types. I admit, it sucks, but with those two Blue Moon poses, maybe an Irregular or two, and a head/fez swap with a few Thouroughbred Barbaries, and you can get a purty good unit.

Good call Henry on ERM.

Love those Thouroughbred guys. Great sculpts and character. (plus, as mentioned, the best Dervish artillery crews. Captive Egyptians probably did NOT wear their full Egyptian uniform when fighting for the Mahdi, chains or no chains)

Ashantis and native musketmen! That's a missing area. One Irregular sculpt, and then nada. Lets see how my OG Zulus with firearms turns out (sculpted pantaloons on them, they look promising).

efredbar14 Jun 2013 7:11 a.m. PST

Show me what you can do with 'em and I'll reconsider my decision.

Right now I'm doing Darkest Africa/WWI Africa in Flats :0.

I have done it in 1/72…

Bloodaxe makes some askaris and Ethiopians that might work for you
