I have this one. It's pretty good, but short. |

Gush is not really good, because he gives you plenty of information, not few of it incorrect, and has gaps you can drive an army train through. It IS an interesting read, however. Germany in the 16th century has so many different states and armies that I am not even aware of a starter here that covers a comprehensive overview. Can you be a bit more precise in your wants? Delbrück wrote some works, and Ortenburg/Fiedler try to give an overview in "Taktik and Strategie der Landsknechte 1500-1650" and "Waffen der Landsknechte 1500-1650" (they do NOT limit these works to Landsknechte). Close, perhaps the best starting place, but still insufficient imho. |

Are there english translations of those books by Ortenburg/Fiedler? I'm looking for a general overview of the development of the german military of that century, not limited to the reiters and landsknecht, but I'm aware that a work as such might be hard to find

Sorry, no English versions I am aware off. I fear that you are out of luck on this topic. There are just two works that MIGHT contain what you are looking for, though both are too expensive for me to check and available only in German anyway. Just for the records: Rainer Leng, Ars belli. Wiesbaden, 2002 – Collections of original military works from the 15th and 16th century, 110 EUR Geschichte des Militär-Erziehungs- und Bildungswesens in den Landen deutscher Zunge, Bernhard Poten, 1889 (old, but extensive – 5 Volumes, best price currently 350 EUR). The former is on my wishlist for some time (among some 500 other titles). If you ever inspire to write a work on a neglected topic, here it is. Considering that the first comprehensive book on the Italian wars was just released, the era is underrepresented not just for Germany. |

While very interesting "Ars Belli" is not what you are looking for, it's focus is quite diffrent link You can find some volumes of Poten's work on google books but have to use a proxy server to access them if you are outside the US |

I was checking some of my old renaissance topics, and I found out that I had forgotten to thank both Puster and Daniel for their help. Thank you very much, guys! And sorry for being late x: |
