Can anyone help me ? I am building an Austrian Army to fight in Italy in the 1799 Campaign with Suvarov and I have read *that in 1798 a new uniform regulation was issued . This changed the coat colour from white to green and the flat fronted bicorne to a helmet. The Austrians I feel in 1799 would still be in the old uniform until it needed replacing , but I cannot find anything to support my theory. There is reference to the Austrians holding on to uniforms till they fell apart and I am guessing that a unit that had been stationed far from Vienna might not have changed so quickly. Does anyone have anything more helpful that might help me ensure I field the right troops on the table ? * Osprey : Austrian Army of the Napoleonic Wars Cavalry |

There is indeed, a manuscript in Berne of 1799 shows still the Dragones with white coats and hats. It would take years to implement the new regualtions for the army.

Von Winterfeldt thank you so much for your comprehensive response , really appreciate you taking the time to share your extensive knowledge of this period. I am fascinated by your source material – I have not come across the Berne Manuscript before – is it available on-line or has it been reprinted in a modern book ? I have Albrecht Adams book on The French Army of 1800 but I have struggled to find many original pictures that have been reprinted from the period. The lancer pennant in the attached picture is a new one on me and just goes to show how much the battlefield reality differs from the prescribed regulation uniform. Thank you once again I will now renew my search for more source material. |

From the Berner Bilderhandschrift exist 4 plates, one Austrian, one Russian one French and one Suisse. Alas I have only a photo about the Austrians. have a look at Markus Stein napoleon-online.de – there are some series covering the Revolutionary period. Also on the ASK Brown collection there are a lot of plates, especially about the Austrian Army.

von Winterfeldt thank you so much for these insights. I am planning to visit Brown University in the summer and I hope to have some time to study the prints and plates , they have as I understand it quite extensive an extensive collection. I have looked at the site you recommended but my German is not up to finding what I am looking for. I will have to leave it till I can translate what I need. Thanks once again for your help. |
