Does anybody make a 28 gun Unité class corvette in 1/1200? I was looking at GHQ and nothing fit the bill. I know that considering Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturing series, I'm sure that there must be something out-there, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. |

At 1/1200 classes, which are a misnomer in the era, are pretty much indistinguishable. The biggest issue would be whether or not surprise had a quarterdeck and forecastle. If so, then the Langton 28 gun frigate would do. If not, then the Langton 24 gun ship or Great Lakes 26 gun ship would do. |

GHQ's HMS Cleopatra is probably the closest candidate from that company. Here is a neat site that gives size comparisons of hulls, and which points out that: "A common 32gun 5th rate was about 126' long, while a common 28gun 6th rate was only 120' long. In 1:1200 scale this would be about 2mm difference." So it would be an approximation, but not such a bad one. link |

The plan on Wikipedia appears to show a separate forecastle and quarterdeck:
The HMS Surprise from the movie was originally a replica of HMS Rose (1757). The replica, designed by Philip C. Bolger, was originally built with a spar deck. I don't think that the original Rose had had one; it was an anachronistic concession to seaworthiness. Ron |

A shipmate of mine (Coog) posted these photos on SOG Anchorage a while back. They are a comparison between GHQ's 32 gun Essex and Skytrek's 32 gun Essex. This is the GHQ 32 kit: link This is the Skytrex Essex kit: link This is hull comparison of the two: link A completed British 32 and his slight conversion of the GHQ 32 kit for Essex. link |
