Whats with all these modular terrain systems that just look like better textured versions of MDF terrain? Not a curve in the entire complex. |
BrotherSevej | 21 May 2013 5:39 p.m. PST |
These are laser cut HDF. These are the best terrain I've seen for some time. Not because of the details etc, but because they make a big release at once and thus making the possibilities staggering. |

Looks very good and I especially like how you can make separate, free-standing structures. These are on my 'to get' list now. |

Hmm. Nice stuff. link At 30.00USD, it pushes the acquisition a bit outside my realm, even for 6 doors. Are these things only to be sold in large lots rather than singles? I just want the doors, not the rest of the junk. Consider I can make a doorway (okay, maybe not with the excess detail) out of papercard for 0.10 cents. At $30 USD, the cost/benefit means it probably is better for me to make 6 doors myself rather than buy them. True, more work, but I wonder. |

Since MDF became the new black, the comments that "I can make the same or better stuff on a shoestring budget" have been on the increase as well. I suppose it's quite true too, especially if you are decently experienced in terrain making and don't count the time you'll spend making the stuff. Spartan Games terrain doesn't at a glance seem to be at the cheap end of the spectrum but it does have some keen design ideas. Also, given what you get for example in the aforementioned door set, I'm not sure if $5 USD per door (size at 2x2' or so) is really at all over-the-top. I'm a little less convinced of their room starter set but I must admit I didn't try to figure out how big the individual pieces are. But where oh where is the other new black, a KickStarter? |

Much prefer this system to Mantic's Battlezones but of course would be even better in 15mm. :) There's just too much stuff all being released for 28mm .. |
MikeHobbs | 22 May 2013 4:46 a.m. PST |
@moocifer I think Spartan are planning a 15mm sci-fi game in the future, so I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this coming out in the smaller scale. I think the game is going to be called Firestorm Invasion |

Spartan has their spin-off company, Studio Sparta, releasing "Planetfall" which I think is 10 or 12mm: studiosparta.co.uk |
Cergorach | 22 May 2013 6:37 a.m. PST |
Planetfall is available in 10mm, but will also become available in 15/18mm and 28mm (of which you see the minis in the third image in the opening post). Not cheap, but you do get a lot for that price point, it also looks very flexible. |
MikeHobbs | 22 May 2013 8:52 a.m. PST |
I do wonder if they'll do 15mm as well as 10mm? cant really see the point. I understand why they would want to do it in say 10 and 28 or 15 and 28 but not all 3 scales unless they are trying to stop all the cries of "it's the wrong scale" |

I do wonder if they'll do 15mm as well as 10mm?
That's what they said, you can already see some minis in 15/18mm here: link6mm/10mm has huge advantages, but really lacks detail on the infantry level, but allows large formations and large vehicles/walkers that don't cost an arm, a leg, and a kidney
28mm has the advantage of being probably the most popular sci-fi scale, there's also a lot of detail possible on an infantry figure. But even basic vehicles are expensive. 15/18mm (~1:100) has the best of both worlds, still good detail on infantry, and vehicles/walkers are still financially viable. The only problem is that it's just not as popular as 28mm gaming. For Studio Sparta it's not a huge investment extra, as the designs are made in 3D applications and you can relatively quickly resize then to a different scale (still have to be careful about wall thickness). They probably also have a good 3D printer in house, so it's only printer time and printing material cost for producing new masters in a different scale. Not to mention that Studio Sparta serves as a niche workshop, so they don't have to hit the kind of sales numbers the main studio needs to achieve with things like Dystopian Wars
It's a bit like GW in it's earlier years, you had 40k, but Epic was in a different scale, just like Battlefleet Ghotic and Inquisitor. GW just got to big, and Spartan Studios just isn't anywhere near that size and it gives their creative people an outlet from the main lines

That complex is insane! I love the look of their 28mm stuff. I doubt I'll be able to afford any of it, sadly
|
tnjrp | 22 May 2013 10:07 p.m. PST |
What I most doubt about their 28mm stuff is that it's actually 28mm or even "heroic" 28mm. I'm thinking it could well be 35mm like Dystopian Legions stuff that was (maybe still is) ostensibly 28mm too. Given the doorways of the buildings are said to be ca. 50mm the trooper standing in the doorway in Tango01/22 May 2013 10:31 a.m. PST does look to be rather on the tall side. Could be a camera angle issue of course. |
