The martian warmachine is interesting but the Mk4 is stupid. It has 8 4" guns and one 10" gun? Eight 101mm and 1 203mm? That's more heavily armed than a destroyer!! The secondary armament, the 'small guns' are bigger than a WW2 tank gun. Also, the 'turrets' are just a little small. There's no room for the breach of the gun much less room for the crew to work it. Very very dumb. I like the Martians but not touching the Earth faction tanks with a 10 foot pole. |

Agreed – the basic tank models are perfectly passable, but the bigger ones are far too 40K Orky
. The Martians, however, look the business

Darn fantasy not conforming to reality! |
xLAVAx | 19 May 2013 3:25 p.m. PST |
Of course it is silly looking. That's why I like it! |
Messiah73 | 19 May 2013 3:29 p.m. PST |
Umm, why does it have to look real or have realistic weapons? We are talking about a game in which Martians have invaded for a second time
If that doesn't make it a fantasy game in which pretty much anything goes, I'm not sure what does
I know its huge, and ridiculously armed, but that's what makes it fun! |
tsofian | 19 May 2013 3:35 p.m. PST |
Actually it has a 254mm gun not a 203mm gun. Under the Washington Treaty this would be classed as a Battleship (just saying). A vessel with this much firepower would probably weigh in at several hundred tons. The 140 ton K Wagen had 4 3 inch guns and a batch of machine guns. How much would a vehicle with more than twice as much firepower weigh, 300 tons? 500? Terry |
DrVesuvius | 19 May 2013 3:43 p.m. PST |
Guess some folks have never heard the VSF concept of a "landship". That said, Mr Pumblechook is right that the secondary turrets are definitely too small for the guns. I don't think the designer was really thinking of how it would practically work if it were real, just thought it would be cool to add "more dakka." |
Mr Pumblechook | 19 May 2013 4:31 p.m. PST |
Dr V, for what it's worth, I like the idea of a landship, the bigger one with the battleship turret looks kind of fun, and the smaller ones with the forward casemate look workable, just this one is ridiculous. A typical WW1 10" naval gun weighs 22 tons on it's own. If they declared the small guns as say 1 pounder pompoms and the big one as a high velocity 50mm/2" or a low velocity 3" it would be a bit more plausible. They'd need to enlarge the sponsons and make the turret top guns as turreted 'deck' guns below the level of the main turret. Also, there are several real life land battleships they could have used as templates : the Char 2C, the Vickers Independent or the T35. Problem is the model would probably be too big for them to make. (Ratt anyone?) This one, the numbers are implausible and the design is ridiculous. |
tsofian | 19 May 2013 5:46 p.m. PST |
In the final analysis a model sets the tone if the game. This one says "I am a fantasy game". So long as folks know it going in no problem! |

They are reviewing the armaments on the tanks. These guys do listen when we point out an issue. |
Lfseeney | 19 May 2013 7:37 p.m. PST |
Still looks like fun to play, and if it makes one feel better, choose your own gun sizes. Was thinking of using the brass barrels from Scotty, at Combat Wombat. I suspect that anti armor will be the round of choice, letting the smaller unit deal with the controlled and lesser things. Lee |

It's a tricky balance for Alien Dungeon to strike. On the one hand, they want that zany steam/diesel-punk aesthetic; on theother they want to suspend your disbelief with vehicles that look like they could be real,.drawing upon real life plans and designs that never made it of the early 20th Century drawing board. |
Bunkermeister | 19 May 2013 11:28 p.m. PST |
I like the idea of a Martian invasion in 1908. I have been working on essentially the same concept for over a year now myself, but using more realistic equipment. There were plenty of real tanks made in WWI and even more like the German K that were prototypes or design studies that would have been fun to actually play in a game. I realise it's a tricky balance, but the various "Mk. IV" designs go way over the line – the more basic types are fine (although the SP artillery is pushing it, and some of the specialist variants just daft) and the land ironclad sketches also look quite promising (the Mk.V I really like, while the really big one has too small a turret for the main gun, but otherwise looks good), but in between they just get too damned silly – the Mk.III tanks are a struggle to suspend disbelief on, and the Mk.IVs are just absurd. (The Martians, on the other hand, far more consistently look the business – I'm really impressed with them.) |
DrVesuvius | 20 May 2013 3:15 a.m. PST |
Mr Pumblechook – I was thinking of almost exactly the same re-design that you propose – light pom-poms, enlarged sponsons and downsize the main gun (I could live with maybe as big as a 6" gun to keep it in the naval weight category). It wouldn't take much to tone it down from impossible caricature to barely plausible while still keeping the OTT-bristling-with-guns aesthetic. I think Terry's hit the nail on the head – this is fantasy and a matter of taste. Some folks like unicycling lancers in their VSF

Well I sure hope they don't do any redesign of product or YET AGAIN I'll have to wait ages for my add-ons. The models may be a bit wonky
but that's fine with me. I like wonky. But mostly I like people who deliver when they say they are going to. |

I'm in wit the wonky crowd. At least it's a consistent wonkiness
|
republic of tolworth | 20 May 2013 7:36 a.m. PST |
we want wonkey we want wonkey! As long as it works in the game and the fluff isn't too bonkers then I'm happy. Mind you this is the era that they could come up with some crazy stuff that's as dangerous to the crew as to the enemy. If you read how nasty being inside those ww1 tanks was! |

One thing I find interesting is how "tight" the Martian tripods are. In the case of unknown alien technology a bit of wonkiness is much easier to explain. For historical human technologies where things are much more well known it is harder to suspend disbelief. But the Martian kit as someone above has said "look the business" while some of the human vehicles don't. Just an observation |
mdauben | 31 May 2013 5:57 a.m. PST |
I've been following this development of this game since I first heard about it. I really like the setting/concept of the game, and the martian tripods are killer. I have to agree though the terran tanks are a bit of a disappointment. I don't mind some "weird science" upgrades to what was historically available in that time period, but I'd prefer if they were a little more realistic. Still, I'll probably be picking up at least the starter box with both factions. |

I'd suggest a few revolving cannon (or 37mm Vickers pompoms) for the secondaries (ouch), and maybe a 3" or a 4.7"(120mm). They look mean, and are also historical. |

Where would they store any reasonably useful amount of ammunition for all those guns? |
