Marc33594, The German tank from the movie was not a M7 Priest but an Isreali Sherman tank. It was an Isherman version of the M4 Sherman use by the IDF (Isreali Defence Force) In the movie Lloyd Bridges called it a "Panther". Funny thing is none of the Panther tanks ever fought in North Africa unless you count the French use of Panther tanks in Algeria in the 1960's.

Ashauace6970,

That Italian film was called 'El Alamein' and it truly was a stinker. It's always been my nominee in similar threads on this subject and it makes 'Castle Keep' look like 'Band of Brothers'. Sorry Vojvoda, but the Italian entry beats your nominee into a cocked hat (with a dead chicken nailed to it).

As was said earlier, it was notable that one Italian even threw himself under an M113 in an attempt to end it all. I think the high (low) point for me was the British bayonet charge, led by Monty standing in a Jeep, firing revolver over the windscreen…

BTW, this is not to be confused with a more recent Italian film of the same name, which is apparently quite good (and did cause some confusion and incredulity here a few years ago, when El Alamein was being nominated as the BEST war film).

You can watch the horror that is the first "El Alamein" movie on Netfix instant. It is trully dreadful.

I like Castle Keep! In fact, I think it's a very good movie. Oh, and The Thin Red Line (1998 version) is one of my all time favourite war movies. There is a 1964 version which is really mediocre but not awful.

When it comes to bad WW2 movies, you have to leave Hollywood and go to Italy and specifically their cheap exploitation section. Inglorious Bastards is one monstrosity…the movie where a forger uses Tippex to doctor German army documents…but my nomination is "The Biggest Battle" aka "Battle Force" which is slightly worse than "The Battle of the Commandos" and features a tank battle at the end where the vehicles look like cardboard remote control toys.

But there is one Hollywood WW2 stinker that rivals the Italian efforts: Which Way To The Front? Starring, written and directed by Jerry Lewis. I need say no more…

Just responding to the intial request, I didnt say it was an M-7 :)

Old enough to not only remember the movie but Lloyd Bridges horrible attempt at a German accent! Like him so much better in Sea Hunt.

MIDWAY. Doesn't get much worse than that…..

Thin Red Line is horrifying, Codetalkers is bad, Battle of the Bulge is bad.
The challenge is defining the terms. Do you get bad points for making a slightly less bad movie, but spending tons of cash on it? Do you get points for pretetnding to depict a historical event and getting not just hte details, but the major arc of the campaign wrong. These are the reasons I give Battle of hte BUlge pride of place atop the heap of awfulness

I don't get the Midway hate…

Thin Red Line is horrifying,

I'm going to stick up for TRL here. Yes, there's a lot of superfluous artsy crap, but it does provide an excellent example of how not to attack a hill*. And Nick Nolte's portrayal of a career officer passed-over in favor of a young buck is excellent.

Codetalkers is bad

I managed to get through 15 minutes of that film, and to this day I regret the loss of that time. "Bad" is way too generous a term for that movie.

* Start moving forward after the artillery is done firing? No, you follow up the barrage so the enemy has no time to recover from the artillery before you arrive. The attack in the movie was a class A cluster-Bleeped text, of the type that actually occurs in warfare.

Ilsa-She-wolf of the SS! I snuck into a theatre to see it when I was young. What a disappointment.

Last Panzer definitely! Followed closely by Roger Corman's Ski Troop Attacks!

Castle Keep is a fantastic movie. My vote is Rock Hudson running around with a bunch of kids fighting Germans.

Attack on the Iron Coast starring Lloyd Bridges gets my vote as a stinker. Also anything on Movies for Men channel, apart from Saints and Soldiers which isn't that bad.

John the Greater23 May 2013 12:33 p.m. PST

I think we can agree that Iron Sky and any of the Ilsa movies (yes, there is more than one!) don't really count as war movies.

I'm surprised no on brought up Tobruk with Rock Hudson and George Peppard, not to mention pretty much the entire Spanish armed forces.

Oh, and I second all the hating on the Thin Red Line. it put me to sleep.

flooglestreet26 May 2013 7:34 p.m. PST

I seem to recall a movie that had Allied troops of some kind fighting the SS for a flying saucer and some aliens. Hitler was in it, too. I'm pretty sure the allies were fighting the axis, but there was a lot of time spent looking at the Germans through binoculars. It was an Italian film IIRC.
