I got a few packs of Peter Pig Cossacks, to augment my Battlefront and Command Decision. Better price than BF, and better looking than CD.

However, unlike the BF and CD ones, they seem to be wearing Kaftans, on top of the gymn… pullover tunic and trousers.
Along with the sewn in bandoliers.
I'm OK with that, as long as someone can tell me what color to paint a WW2 Kaftan! grin If it matters, they have the same fur hat as the BF and CD ones.

Could you post a picture of the figure?

I am looking for a figure to use for my Vichy Cherkesses and would like a figure in kaftan.

Here they are on the Peter Pig site:

Google says it's called a Cherkeska, and the colour seems to depend on what "flavour" of cossacks they are (Don, Kuban, Terek etc.) For Kuban cossacks at least it seems to be black, fading to a dark grey obviously enough. (For them the shirt was usually red, at least supplies permitting.)

At the 1945 victory parade, so smarter than they'd looked for years:

Agree with Dom – I would do them in a faded black

Black – agreed.

One of my favorite craft paints is Ceramcote's Charcoal. grin

Thanks!

I did mine with dark blue, for what it's worth.

Don didn't wear Cherkeskas.

Traditionally the Cossacks bought their own, and favoured a mix of all shades of grey through to almost black for duty purposes (dress might be more colourful). But obviously that would not be true in the Soviet era.

Very dark grey looks good. Cuffs were often a constrasting colour. Sometimes the bullet holders were too, but not usually for field ones. (That Osprey shows the tops of them in grey, mimicking the silver the original ones would have had.)

Undershirt red for Kuban, light blue for Terek.

Ta – mental note made on the Don; had never come across that.
