Hi all,

Can the Battlefront 15mm M113 and M577 be used after Vietnam? More specifically, Iraq? Or do they require significant conversions?

If M113s were used in the actual conflict then yes.

The only major addition post-Vietnam is external fuel stores at the back. You can see examples of this on the M113's wikipedia page.

BTW the second image is the M577 command variant.

i see why no reason not to, the extra fuel cells were not a universal fit to all m113 and plenty still have non fitted now especialy non usa ones.

Looks like it to me, add some details maybe if you are picky.

In 2006, we had some just like the top picture stationed for road sentry duty. My impression is they were mostly used in support roles vice direct combat ops (where bradleys would have been used). During the invasion and battle for the airport in Baghdad, one of my friends was the S3 for his armor unit and road an M-113 into battle with the republican guard. His mounted a mini-gun instead of .50 HMG. (He was awarded a Silver Star for valor as he repeated an Audie Murphy like performance from the gun mount).

We still had M577 command tracks in Germany up to the Early 1980s. In Panama Task Force Gator M113s (7th ID) we commandeered to look for Pineapple Face. They were basically unmodified from the Vietnam era except I think an engine upgrade.

Here is a good link as well:

I had forgotten about all the ones in Lebanon in the mid 1980s. I had one guarding my Apt that had a 106 mounted on the side but was basically the same as the ones we had early 1980s.

From what I saw there were several M113A2 and M113A3 variants and M577's in use, usually by engineers.

From what I saw, they had the external tanks on the back and the radiator ID plates on the side and LOTS of stowage. Typically, had the standard or ACAV commander turret, but not the side mounted M60s. Looks like there is a new shield with a window later on.

The .50 is a bit newer, but you really will not notice the difference at 1/100 scale

I'd say Go For it. But then I use Old Glory and BattleHonors

Like the picture above, lots of stowage on a vehicle model can cover up any minor differences between models!

We had both at LSA Anaconda in 2007-2008 when I was there.

Mostly static at the ECPs, but they were there.

As well as the advice given above; remove the cupola from M577 models and replace with a plain, flat, circular hatch.

Barks116 May 2013 6:50 a.m. PST

What are the big visual differences between the A1/2/3 versions?

haywire16 May 2013 8:10 a.m. PST

The A2 and A3 have the external fuel tanks on the rear.
I think the "mud flap" on the front is different. But I think that has more to do with the role of that M113 vs model number.

The rest are small cosmetic differences on the placement and shape of fuel caps and antennae on the top plate. Stuff that really a rivet counter may care about.

haywire16 May 2013 8:43 a.m. PST

I only know this because I was trying to find all the different variants for modding 1/72 scale M113s.

Most of what I know, I gleaned off the different 1/35 M113 model kits out there. What is in the field could be (is) vastly different.

zoneofcontrol16 May 2013 10:01 a.m. PST

A little ways back I posted a similar question. Geoff at QRF replied that they were working on the newer version (A3? w/ external tanks) but that it was not ready. I have not seen or heard of any since then.

thatguy9616 May 2013 10:54 a.m. PST

Just to note, the A2 could have the fuel tanks fitted, but these only became standard on the A3. The smoke grenade launchers standard on the A3 were also refitted to later A2s. At base, the most readily noticeable difference between the A1 and the A2 is the additional float on the trim vane. The rest of the big modifications had to do primarily with the engine cooling layout and the vehicle's suspension.

For heaven's sake don't distract Geoff – the Helmeted Post War Brits are further up the queue…

Jemima Fawr16 May 2013 5:19 p.m. PST

Seconded!

And the Overvalwagen… ;)

zoneofcontrol16 May 2013 7:27 p.m. PST

But I want M113A3s for my Post-War Brits!!! There is no reason that we colonials should be the only ones stuck with them.

Jemima Fawr16 May 2013 9:09 p.m. PST

Take a number and get in the queue. ;)

GeoffQRF17 May 2013 2:01 a.m. PST

It's a very wide queue. Actually, come to think of it, it is both wide and deep.

But helmeted PW Brits (and some of the missing ones, like Sterling SMG and LAW66) first…

And Chas seems to be working on early Cold War German vehicles like the M113G and Kanone.

Then I really ought to get these Canadians sorted.

Oh, and the updated and expanded Stryker range…

Lion in the Stars17 May 2013 3:35 a.m. PST

And that whole AH1 family…

No, I take that back. I want a full set of Strykers first!

Jemima Fawr17 May 2013 6:27 a.m. PST

Overvalwagen?

Yes, very few of our M-113s and M577s had the external fuel tanks … Like the Bde HQ had a few M113A3s along standard M577s … I served in 3 Active Duty US Army Mech Bns from '84-'90 … including 2 tours in the ROK … And commanded a Mech Co. '87-'89 …

Well he did just find the Lanchester Armoured Car again: link
