"KAI announced on May 6th that the company concluded the contract for mass producing the FA-50, amounting to approximately 1.1 trillion won with The Defense Acquisition Program Administration ("DAPA"). In accordance with the contract, subsequent to the first mass production contract which was signed on 2011, KAI plans to deploy the aircraft (first production portion) for preparing for the actual battle beginning in August and seek its entire force integration until 2016.

The FA-50 is a light combat aircraft which was developed based on the T-50, a supersonic advanced trainer in order to replace the military's superannuated fighters, like the F-5E/Fs and A-37s. The FA-50 combat aircraft is able to load up to 4.5 tons of weapons including the basic weapons like air-to-air/air-to-surface missiles and machine guns as well as precision guidance bombers such as JDAMs, or joint direct attack munitions and multi-purpose precision guidance CBUs (or cluster bomb units). Also, the FA-50 fighter, complete with a night vision apparatus, has a mission capability both in the daytime and in the night time and boasts its improved self-protection ability for the aircraft itself.…"

Question: With the FA-50 North Korea has a remarkable superiority to South Korea?

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Other way around, I think you mean. I'm pretty sure the South has a remarkable superiority to the North in most every regard except endless hunger and horror.

FA-50 looks like it will be aquired by SOUTH Korea, which IMHO already has superiority over North Korea. This will make it even moreso…

Damon.

North Korea still has a remarkable superiority on the big hats and big hair fronts.

North Korea still has a remarkable superiority on the big hats and big hair fronts.

I'd say dominant.

Let us also not overlook the Norks unchallenged lead in silly rhetoric. Nobody can toss around a 'capitalist running dog lackey' phrase like the Norks.

That's a nice looking little jet- F-16s little brother maybe.

NK's frontline fighter is still the MiG-21. They don't have enough MiG-29's to challenge the south, and even MiG-29's are getting long-in-the-tooth.

South Korea joins China (J-10), Japan (F-2A) and Taiwan (F-CK-1) in developing its own 'indigenous' fighter.

in a nutshell, the FA-50 is a armed training aircraft, not unlike the Hawk, the AMX, or the Alpha Jet. However, from what I've read the FA-50 is superior to all it's competitors.

FA-50 is a fine aircraft, but as optional points out, it's basically an Alpha Jet in terms of capability and performance. That's not bad, and a huge improvement over what they are using to replace it with. Don't forget that these will compliment the F15s and 16s that the South already has, making a superior force completely dominant over North Korea.

Cute plane. Looks like an F-16 and an Alphajet had a lost weekend together.

Modern Jets in 1/600 for me.

I was talking to a T-50 pilot (one of the Golden Eagles display team) last year. I'd never even heard of a T-50 until that moment. He told me that it is a direct derivative of the F-16, hence the close resemblance – especially at the back-end, which is damn-near identical.

Deadone13 May 2013 5:35 p.m. PST

FA-50 is F-5E/F replacement jet. T-50 and T/-50 are advanced/LIF trainers.

And they're a South Korean jet.

South Korean air force fleet also includes:

180 F-16C/D
60 F-15K
60 F-4E – to be replaced by 60 new aircraft (my money is on F-15 Silent Eagle).

The Golden Eagle was developed with assistance from Lockheed Martin, hence the F-16-esque vibe of the thing.

North Korea's AF is
- 30 odd MiG-29
- 40 odd MiG-23
- 40 odd Su-25
- couple of hundred MiG-21/J-7.
- 100 odd J-6 (Chinese MiG-19)
- 100 odd J-5 (Chinese MiG-17)
-40 A-5 (based on MiG-19)
-40-80 H-5 (Chinese Il-28)
- 18 Su-7

it's basically an Alpha Jet in terms of capability and performance.

Huh?

Alpha Jet is a subsonic 7.5 ton trainer with no radar and with light ground attack capability.

Golden Eagle is a supersonic 12.3 ton aircraft with radar, BVR capability (radar + AMRAAM), thrust to weight ratio of 0.96:1 and guided weapons capability.

Golden Eagle is comparable to Northrop F-5 series of aircraft, not an Alpha Jet.
