B, then A

Drafted, then extended for a year to be a Green Beret (never was one). This required giving me an honorable discharge after a week in the Army while simultaneously enlisting me for a three year hitch. I actually spent six years in the Army, largely because I needed cash and the reenlistment bonus for my MOS was $2,500 USD (went down from $10,000 USD the week before I re-upped, naturally).

I -- I volunteered in my absence, thanks to a couple of school friends. I then volunteered again on my own a couple of years later. But as one time was the TA and the other was the UOTC, neither counts as real soldiering (although the TA were real soldiers before I joined, and have become so again).

All the best,

John.

H – professional civilian (actually, almost joined to pay for school but then got a scholarship); while I have the utmost admiration for those who served and continue to, my immediate family were pretty anti-military when I was a lad (grand-pa on my Dad's side did not think the US Army gave his dad a fair deal, and as to my Mom's side they are all either Cossacks or chaps dodging "volunteering" for the Czar's army)

Any other good answers that I'm leaving out?

J) It is my policy neither to confirm or deny involvement with Special Operations.

Sorry

Eyes were too bad for Air Force Academy (although the State Rep put me as first alternate to his appointment). Would likely have washed out anyway. Wasn't ready for college – high school was too easy and had no study habits. Although the academy might have corrected that.

Was 4H for draft (college deferment).

A – 23 Years regular Royal Navy, prior to that 3 years in the Territorial Army Volunteer Reserve. (UOTC Cardiff, 2nd Bn The Wessex Regiment)

And yes we had a few moments when a sense of humour went a long way, but overall I am sooo glad I did – been places and seen things I otherwise couldn't even have imagined…

more importantly, was priviledged to serve alongside men and women whose courage, professionalism and sacrifice still makes my heart swell with pride when I think of them after 3 years outside…

If life is the difference you make, the places you go, and the people you go with, then you definately need to add salt to taste!
