Just a reminder that the coming weekend (18 & 19 May) sees the Sheffield Triples Wargames Show return to the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield (just off J34 of the M1).

link

News of the show has even made the local paper – though not for the first time we have been misquoted: link

As well as helping (in my role as a Sheffield Wargames Society member) to ensure the show runs smoothly, I will also spend bit of time running this year's Wargame Developments game, Ten Rounds Rapid. This is a 15 minute solo game set in August 1914 in which the player commands a BEF infantry battalion facing an attack by the field grey pointy-helmeted hordes. You could win a medal…

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER13 May 2013 8:06 a.m. PST

Have a good time you guys.

Rapier Miniatures13 May 2013 8:14 a.m. PST

Heeeheee should be fun.

Rapier Miniatures will be there.

Could someone from Sheffield get back to me though as I have been trying to contact you about a Trader that can't attend even though booked, but had no responce via the website or Marks account on a forum.

Patient Zero13 May 2013 8:53 a.m. PST

Nice write up in The Star. In what way have you been misquoted?

pink panzer13 May 2013 9:32 a.m. PST

Rapier Miniatures – The Show Secratary has been informed and will ring you.

Patient Zero – the words weren't exactly what was said – and some have been attributed different people, although only John , Mark and I were involved.

On balance I think it's a pretty good write-up.

Yesthatphil13 May 2013 9:49 a.m. PST

Phew! That was better than expected, Pink Panzer …. They seem keen to focus on gender and age (I wonder how they describe the needlecrafts clubs?), but good publicity on balance, I think …

I play with toy soldiers and model trains Mr Armatys what does that make me!

pink panzer13 May 2013 10:06 a.m. PST

It was actually Mr H who said something along those lines (pun intended). He is a confirmed toy train addict with a sense of irony…

John Armatys13 May 2013 10:31 a.m. PST

I wouldn't ever criticise anyone else's hobby (very aware that those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones). My father was a model railway fan and I tend to visit the local model railway show (occasional useful models and interesting ideas), although I don't indulge myself.

… but I have a tough time keeping a straight face when someone tells me they do line dancing !!!

Forgot to add that I'll be there both days as last year so see y'all around.

deephorse13 May 2013 11:25 a.m. PST

Will there be a charge for car parking this year?

GrumpyOldWargamer13 May 2013 11:46 a.m. PST

Triples or Partizan?

I can only go to one of them so which should it be?

Redcurrant13 May 2013 1:00 p.m. PST

Will be going to Triples on the Sunday – look forward to seeing what's new and talking to the vendors.

Steve

Volleyfire13 May 2013 2:11 p.m. PST

I notice there's a disclaimer appeared this year on the website re the parking. And that the same 'one price both days'entry fee still applies

pink panzer13 May 2013 2:28 p.m. PST

The parking charge of £3.50 GBP is sadly completely beyond the control of the show organisers.

deephorse13 May 2013 3:24 p.m. PST

Craig Ambler14 May 2013 12:05 a.m. PST

Will be there. Always a good show so hopefully no change there.

I liked the old site better but this is more roomy.

Should be good

Craig

Rapier Miniatures14 May 2013 1:46 a.m. PST

is the parking fee for visitors, or will traders have to pay it as well?

jameshammyhamilton14 May 2013 3:17 a.m. PST

I am in three minds about going or not.

The parking fee is a bit of a downer and when combined with the entry fee and petrol even though it is not that far from home it ends up costing over £25.00 GBP to go. The question is would I put that value on attending or not and to be honest it is on the cusp of worth it.

The main issue is that unless I want to be there all day I am not that likely to be able to spread the travel costs as most of my mates who are going will be playing in a tournament.

The new site is roomy and better lit than the old one but is rather soulless.

pink panzer14 May 2013 5:06 a.m. PST

Traders do not have to pay for parking!

Dr Mike Salwey14 May 2013 5:10 a.m. PST

I'll be there for the two days with the SMS (6mm) painting clinic. A bit of sculpting may also be going on during the Saturday!

Not sure about souless, I quite like the new venue with space to move about and everthing contained in the couple of rooms.

Martin Rapier14 May 2013 7:55 a.m. PST

" In what way have you been misquoted?"

What I actually said was 'We have a lot in common with railway modellers' (as in the collecting, modelling aspects), which somehow transmuted into John slagging railway modellers off.

Anyway, come along to Triples, play our well researched and highly detailed combat simulation of 1914 era battalion level command and you might get to win a medal or see me in a Picklehaube. No, that wasn't it the paper either.

Bye bye14 May 2013 8:44 a.m. PST

We are putting on a demo game – do we have to pay the car parking.

GrumpyOldWargamer14 May 2013 9:20 a.m. PST

'We are putting on a demo game – do we have to pay the car parking.'

You do get free entry, what more do you want!

SquireBev14 May 2013 10:31 a.m. PST

Reckon I'll come down on the train. If I have to lug everything around with me I'll be less likely to spend too much.

Yeah right…

Volleyfire14 May 2013 10:45 a.m. PST

That's the trouble with newspaper hacks, if there isn't any whiff of a scandal they invent one. :-)

You should be used to that on TMP.

jameshammyhamilton15 May 2013 5:02 a.m. PST

Going by train, now there's a plan….

Checks Railtrack

:(

£16.60 GBP return, perhaps not.

Jeremy Sutcliffe15 May 2013 7:41 a.m. PST

I'll be going. Haven't a clue what I need. (What I might want when I see it is another matter).

Has to be Sunday this year and it'll be a long day out. Early to Sheffield then back to Old Trafford for a CB30 match.

John Treadaway15 May 2013 7:52 a.m. PST

£3.50 parking

I've paid that for an hour of parking in central London.

You've never had it so good!

John T

freewargamesrules15 May 2013 1:34 p.m. PST

I will be going both days so should see you all there. As John T says £3.50 GBP is very cheap. I think Salute is £10.00 GBP

And its cheaper to stay in Sheffield!

Volleyfire15 May 2013 2:48 p.m. PST

I think parking even in Boston for a hour's shopping is now £1.70 GBP in a normal car park so £3.50 GBP for a day is actually quite reasonable.

Von Miligan15 May 2013 2:49 p.m. PST

Early war miniatures will be there. It's our first visit and we are looking forward to it.

See you there,

Pault@ewm

Jeremy Sutcliffe16 May 2013 2:39 a.m. PST

How much does it cost to park at the Meadowhall shopping complex? It's probably cheaper to park there and ride three or four stops on the tram.

pink panzer16 May 2013 3:04 a.m. PST

There is also a fair bit of (free!) on-street parking within walking distance of the venue.

Dr Mike Salwey16 May 2013 7:29 a.m. PST

…. or speak with friends and share cars, use a bike to reduce your carbon footprint, train/tram/feet…

Personally I will be paying the £3.50 GBP and parking next to the event, too much to unload/load.

Sir Sidney Ruff Diamond16 May 2013 12:26 p.m. PST

Is it a 10:00 AM start? I can't see a time on the website.

pink panzer16 May 2013 1:52 p.m. PST

It is indeed a 10am start.

Sir Sidney Ruff Diamond16 May 2013 11:26 p.m. PST

Thanks. Looking forward to it.

Belis4rius17 May 2013 6:02 a.m. PST

Magister Militum will be there, buy from the stall. Do not wait and buy online, they keep your money, refuse to send replacements, make you go through the hoops with your card issuer and then to top it all, make their own claim through the Post Office while keeping your cash.

Lardie the Great18 May 2013 12:29 p.m. PST

Really enjoyed it today, bought some books, some nice new stuff from Antenociti's Workshop, paint from Magister Militum, though from a traders view in may have been a bit quiet, best Triples (for me) in years.

Volleyfire18 May 2013 1:38 p.m. PST

Looked pretty busy until mid afternoon. We parked 3 streets further on without any problem. Spent a bit more than last year, just over £200.00 GBP again, thought all in all a decent show. Surprised at the slight lack of Vietnam FOW for sale on the only traders stands purveying Battlefront though as I fancied some of that. Apart from that we had no complaints about food/drink prices or anything else really. All in all a decent day out. Ta Sheffield.

deephorse19 May 2013 8:59 a.m. PST

Went today and had a good time.

It started with the "do you want to go straight on and park for free, or turn right and park for £3.50 GBP?" Should I pretend to be going to the adjacent sports centre, or do I look too much like a wargamer to get away with it? A dilemma for next year perhaps? I overheard a trader making this very point to what I assume to be one of the organisers. Why the discrimination against the wargamers?

Plenty to see, do and buy in the main halls, though I wonder whether or not the traders in the smaller hall got the same footfall? It always seemed to be very quiet when I visited.

The food was good and not bad value for money. And the toilets were clean enough. Derby take note.

Jimlad4819 May 2013 9:33 a.m. PST

I must say I find it ironic that people will complain about spending £3.50 GBP on parking, but will happily spend £3.50 GBP or more on a miniature at the show which in all likelihood will never see the light of day after the show!

SquireBev19 May 2013 10:10 a.m. PST

I went down by train and then tram. Bloody hell but the g-forces on those trams almost beat the rides at Blackpool Pleasure Beach!

Thoroughly enjoyed the show, ended up spending about £150.00 GBP, but got a good bargain from Wargames Emporium on a Copplestone Castings tank, which was worth every penny.

Will definitely make Triples part of my itinerary for next year, as it'll help bridge the long desolate months between Vapnartak and Fiasco.

deephorse19 May 2013 11:25 a.m. PST

It's about fairness Jim, whether or not you find it ironic. If everyone using the car parks in the vicinity of the venue had to pay £3.50 GBP then there would be no argument. You pay, or park on street at whatever distance away.

Instead, the men in the yellow tabards discriminate between one group going to one venue, and another group going to the other. So in one car park visitors park for free. In the other, in places just the width of an access road away, you pay for the privilege.

As far as I can tell, both venues (Ice and EIS) are owned by Sheffield International Venues, so far from it being different owners doing their own thing, it appears to be out and out discrimination against those attending Triples. I would like to know what SIV's rationale for this is.

If you're content with this discrimination Jim then fair enough. I'm not, I and hope that someone 'in the know' can provide an explanation by next year.

Ben Avery19 May 2013 12:28 p.m. PST

Went today and enjoyed it. I parked locally. For me it's more the principle rather than the cost itself. Plus that is £3.50 GBP ot spend on figures. Picked up the PSC sprays to try out, some terrain from the Tree Fellas and Last Valley, plus some reduced Ready to Roll vehicles and the plastic Somuas. I only picked up some varnish from Under the Bed – I haven't finished painting up my Vapnartak purchases yet, but the price was good. Out of interest, anyone know who was selling the Warmodelling figures in the main hall? Although he only had two Caen British Infantry boxes with him I was able to get individual packs to make up the numbers to get the show deal price. Just a bit disappointing one of the boxsets was missing figures. Anyone else had this problem?

GrumpyOldWargamer19 May 2013 1:14 p.m. PST

I went to Triples today (Sunday) and it was dead!

That, of course, is good for me as a customer but all of the traders I spoke to were moaning about it being a two day show when it only justifies being a one day show.

A couple even said thay would not be attending next year.

Jeremy Sutcliffe19 May 2013 2:51 p.m. PST

First time I've been on a Sunday for some time. I was there between 10:30 and 12. I was surprised how quiet it was although it was picking up as I went.
