Just saw RotK. Wow. Okay...I know..I am way way behind the times, but..well..I can't think of a good excuse right now. For that matter, just saw TT Extended too. Wow. Far far better than the theatrical version. Very impressed. Yes, I realise not all Tolkienesque applications were made to the films and some things were goofy, but I am okay with that. The film trilogy is a far better project than I could have done or could have even attempted. That rates pretty high in my book. Anyone have a line on when the Extended RotK is going to appear? I am hoping it goes into a bit more depth with the underlying plotlines - After effects on the Shire, disappearence of Saruman/Wormtongue, Eowyn/Faramir (this seemed to get a lot more attention in the book)..etc. |

I think the death of Saruman (P. Jackson version, of course...) is definately going to be in there. The rest, I'm not sure... |

Sources indicate that we'll get the House of Healing (Eowyn/Faramir love story), Frodo and Sam hiding with an Orc work party in Mordor, Merry officially joining Rohan with Theoden, the Mouth of Sauron at the Black Gate, Gandalf vs. Which King at Minas Tirith, and more fighting around the Pelenor, along with the normal additional caracter development and subplot bits. What we will NOT get in the EE is the Scouring of the Shire. The little bit you see in Galadrial's mirror in FOTR is all you get, and all PJ shot. Too bad, that, but in all the EE has about 50 additional minutes. Should be fun. |

Gandalf at the gate with the Witch King is my favorite part of the book. I sorely missed that in the theatrical release. Neal |

It is scheduled for a December 14th release (in the US) You will also get some scenes from the Black Ships, including a cameo by Peter Jackson as a Pirate Captain who gets killed by Aragorn I think. |

We are counting the days here. I am missing not having "the next installment" coming out in Dec. |
| Autarch | 11 Oct 2004 4:46 p.m. PST |
would that be a carrot belching pirate captain? i don't think Mouth of Sauron made the cut, unfortunately. at least, the guy from road warrior that was cast as Mouth isn't listed in the credits of the film at all, i'm not even sure they ended up filming that scene. but who cares? the two key things will be Saruman's death and (especially) Gandalf's confrontation with WKA: can't beleive the later wasn't a part of the theatrical release. i dearly hope additional scenes at Pellenor give it more of a seige feeling, as that's really the only disappointment i had with any of the films. |

Neotacha is pretty sure she spotted Frodo's kit lying on the ground as our heroes move back from yelling at the Gate; if so, then they probably filmed the Mouth of Sauron scene, and my guess is we will see it. I haven't kept up with the rumor mill in months, but 3 or 4 months back the rumors were tMoS was going to be in. |
| kalgaloth | 11 Oct 2004 5:55 p.m. PST |
They did film the mouth of Sauron scene and will be in the extended edition. I also can't wait to see the Gandalf fighting the witch king. |

Action figures and the GW model for the Mouth of Sauron are both available and identical, so the source must be out there somewhere! |

I always thought it was kind of funny that in the trailer for tRotK you see Gandalf galloping up to confront the Boss Ring Wraith, and then the scene was MIA from the film. |

GW and Sabertooth guys in production have seen the Mouth of Sauron footage - it definitely was shot and is the source for the figures/models. Aragorn guts him :-) It is possible it wont make the extended version, but I dont see why not. It may have been said a million times in previous threads, but I could have done with less Gollum, less post Mt Doom Shire and would have put in the Death of Saruman, Gandalf at the Gates, and the Mouth of Sauron. Those are the big three missing scenes in the movie, taken out for more minutes of Gollum and Shire fluff. Supposedly PJ made those switches late, to make Gollum more menacing/important. Once again the artistic hamstringing "Each movie has to stand on its own" BS. Sigh Neal |

How could they show the death of Saruman without showing the Scouring of the Shire? Do you think his death scene is moved to some other place and situation? |
| Rudyard Kitling | 12 Oct 2004 9:26 a.m. PST |
To me 'The Scouring of the Shire' is THE finale to the book, showing how much the four hobbits had changed. I left the cinema completely dissapointed after the really wet cinematic ending, bah! I'm getting cross just thinking about it. |
| smcwatt | 12 Oct 2004 9:57 a.m. PST |
Saruman's death scene apparantly happens at Isengard, and from what I have read, he doesn't die, but is just rendered powerless, as per the book to that point, but I could be wrong. I've heard the scene hit the cutting room floor, but it's content is unclear. From what I have also read, Christopher Lee was quite angry the scene wasn't in the theatre version. If you have the picture book about the weapons and armour of Middle Earth, you will see a brief write up on the Mouth of Sauron, including pics of his horse's barding, if I recall correctly. I would assume they at least made a costume, if not filmed the scene. SMc. |
| Earthquake | 12 Oct 2004 12:07 p.m. PST |
From what I've heard, Saruman dies after falling from Orthanc and being impaled on some wreckage. That's 6 minutes. only 44 more to find... |
| mweaver | 12 Oct 2004 1:29 p.m. PST |
To be fair, I think it would have been hard to work the Scouring of the Shire into the film - certainly the original theatrical release of the film. The dramatic climax of the film is the destruction of the Ring*; Tolkein had about six ending scenes strung out after that point. Jackson filmed about three of those conclusions, and opted out of the rest. Even then, the most common complaint from reviewers of RotK was that the ending(s) drug on too long. I like that chapter too - but I can see why it wasn't there in the film. *Unless you're Neotacha, in which case the climax of the film is the death of her hero, Boromir, before he skragged any of the annoying hobbits.

My understanding is the burning of the shire was also shot and should also be included in the extended version. |
| mweaver | 12 Oct 2004 7:27 p.m. PST |
But the Shire wasn't burned... in the book or the movie. That brief scene in the Mirror was a possibility that didn't materialize. |
| William | 12 Oct 2004 8:45 p.m. PST |
I've got a friend at work that basically lived at theonering.net for the last 4-5 years, and she said that the Scouring of the Shire bit was never intended to be included because it would have been a pain to make it flow with the rest of the movie, it would have been anti-climactic, and Jackson didn't like that part of the book. So based on that I'd say the likelyhood that it is there in the extended edition is pretty low. I could be wrong, but I trust her info. |
| Weasel | 12 Oct 2004 10:27 p.m. PST |
Im betting: More battle More crying hobbits :) The original was breathtaking in the theater, so Im definately looking forward to the extended |
| bridget midget the return | 13 Oct 2004 4:18 a.m. PST |
And then I want to see all 3 extended editions shown at the cinema! Now that would be good. Back to back with a 20 minute refreshment break in between each. I'd pay good money for that, I really would. |

I was lucky enough to make 'Trilogy Tuesday' last year, where we saw Extended Fellowship, Extended Two Towers and then ROTK (theatrical cut, obviously) about two hours early than 'official release date'. It ROCKED ASS. But let me tell you we got an hour between each film, and by God we needed it. 20 minutes just isn't going to cut it - trust me :) |
John Leahy | 13 Oct 2004 4:59 p.m. PST |
I can't wait to see what is going to be in it. It does feel wierd that we aren't looking forward to another Christmas Rings movie on its way. Thanks, John |

I'd be happy with 50 more minutes of rohhirim (sic) trampling orcs |
| 01Humphrey Goldenbollocks | 18 Oct 2004 7:07 a.m. PST |
To add what I have read over the months (and I have been keenly interested and paid attention): Mouth of Sauron is in (note the blood on Aragorn's sword as he harangues the troops outside the Black gates - that must be MofS's gore). There will be no Scouring of the Shire: PJ said as much on the DVD extra material, which is from an interview he did years back. Saruman dies at Orthanc - I think Wormtongue kills him, like in the book. Other than that, I have no idee how much other stuff will flesh out the c. 50 minutes of extended footage. |
