Hey...I was wondering who here uses Mein Panzer rules fron ODGW and what your take is.... |
| Mike G | 11 Oct 2004 5:05 a.m. PST |
I use them and I like them a lot. I have used many rule systems and I prefer Mein Panzer. |

They aren't bad rules, but I always thought there was too much fiddly math for firing. |

Nice - use them for a change when using 1/300 stuff - nice mechanisms although a bit too detailed for some casual gamers, detailed as in a bit 'fiddly'. Depends what sort of game you are after. Rich J

I just got them. They have bare minimum ToE's for WW2. They want you to buy the ww2 data book. I like the system. If you order directly from them, they are a little slow, but It will get to you. Otherwise go for it. |

I like the system also. Personally, I have always had good service from them. The system is fairly detailed, yet plays quick. Combat is quite deadly in this game. The second edition plays much better than the first when infantry is being used. |

I will second Lanorl on the combat. It is pretty deadly usually one roll and the target is dead. We adjusted the combat chart to reduce the chances of a one shot kill which helped. When ODGW issued the second release and it did not supply all equipment stats, except for the bare minimum, I stopped using the system. |

Just to give a little overview. Mein Panzer does require more than one book. No hidden agenda here, there is a very specific reason for it. The primary book is called the "Core Rules" and contains just that ... rules. You get a little bit of WW1, WW2, and modern stuff but for the most part it is rules. These rules are broken out into three sections. Basic, Advanced, and Drop-In. The Basic Rules cover the dirt basic for tank-v-tank combat. The Advanced Rules adds all the game mechanics you will need for anything you want to play. And the Drop-Ins cover specific areas, such as Infantry, Artillery, Amphibious, etc. Each Drop-In uses the mechanics already in place and adds only those rules necessary to play. From there we break out wars into their own Data Book. The WW2 and SCW data books are out now. Korea should be soon. The WW2 Data Book has 300+ pages, covers all the combantants of the war and has 5000+ pieces of data. (To keep the price down, some of the obscure countries are available only via the web.) These Data Books are the reason why we don't combine everything in to one game. If you want to play multiple periods, you only buy the rules once and expand with whatever war you want to game. One last thing ... ODGW supports their games like NO other company. You buy the book ONCE and we promise NEVER to pull a GW on you. As long as you have internet access, you will have access to every single update and change we make for free. Just download the new page(s), toss the old pages out, and wa-la, you have the latest edition of the book. And for those who have the old "World War II Edition" ... email me at jon@odgw.com and I'll tell you how you can get into the Core Rule private area of the website for free. Yes, we're even supporting people with the OLD rules too.

A friend of mine who has won GAMA awards for his game designs and is pretty staunchly against other game systems than his own swears by Mein Panzer. That recomendation is worth a lot to me. I am definitely going to look into them at Fall In. --Pete |

So you know, there is a lot of activity right now in and around the Mein Panzer and Battlelines sytems - in my view the sign of a healthy game design. Expect a lot of very good and interesting improvements and refinements to what is already a good game system. Also, as Jon Coulter (designer) said, all of the updates to the rules are available online. You never fall behind after your initial purchase. |

I bought the original (1st edition) rules, and I was able to download the new rules for free. They had improved a lot of aspects of the game from the first edition. The only thing that I bought was the data book. That book is huge, and it covers every possible combatant of the war, and if someone (or some piece of equipment)is not covered, you can contact the folks at ODGW and they will research and add it. They then update the data on the website which you will have access to after buying the game. The support for this game is awesome! |
