A while back I designed a four game linear campaign set around southern central England in the mid-late 5th century BC.

The rules are Song of Arthur and Merlin by Ganesha Games using 600 point warbands. All figures are 10mm.

All the details of the campaign can be found at link

After a gloriously sunny bank holiday Monday afternoon spent indoors, we managed to play the first three games.

The final gripping chapter will follow shortly.

Nice tale of battle and adventure! Really enjoyed it. Sounds like "Song…" is really pretty good.

Monger, it's a really elegant system which lends itself well to customisation.

Very nice layout and good job painting those little fellows.

@Harry: Yeah? I am not a big fan of skirmish games… but I must admit, it does look pretty good. I am currently prepering my next project, which is going to be dark ages (not sure if I want to focus on the Arthurian era, or the Viking first). But as far as rules an such, I have been looking for some rules to try out that are period specific. I am a devoted Impetvs player, so thats my go-to set of rules for big battles. But I am looking at some others as well… just for the fun of it, and perhaps get some ideas, or perhaps for smaller battles as well.

I have Dux by the Lardies, een looking at Dux Bell., and have been taking a look at "Song". Seems to have some interesting ways of playing that era.

What do you think?

monger27 May 2013 2:57 p.m. PST

Oh… and tried Saga. Saga is really a fun GAME, but isn't quite what I want.

I am also going to be using 15mm as well I might add :)

Monger – I agree about Saga – quite fun but gimmicky (I know that alot of people disagree, but I think the gameboard mechanic is gimmicky… so sue me <don't sue me, I can't afford it>).

Dux Bellorum is a great wee game for larger battles, I'd certainly suggest Song of Arthur and Merlin for skirmishes. Dux Brit (the Lardies game) looks awesome. I haven't played it myself but the campaign flavour looks really entertaining.

What I really like about Song of Arthur and Merlin (besides the SBH core system) is its flexibility. It has rosters for different forces and personalities but hey, if you think Saxons should be a bit dumb (harder to activate) but stronger and Britons should be sharper but weaker, tweak your warbands and nobody will raise an eyebrow. They have character/warband generators which allow you to fully customise your little guys.

SAM sounds great. I can see myself grabbing it and using it for smaller games right away. Your report here was fantastic… and looks like something I would get into as a 'change of pace' from all the set piece battles I crave.

From the historical side, how far up the time scale do you think the rules can handle? I have a pretty strong interest in dark age through the 13th C. Of specific interest for me at the moment is expanding my armies to the Anglo Irish invasion (13th C.). Think the rules could handle that kind of setting?

Certainly – they would do anything up to the introduction of gun powder at a pinch.

Dan Mersey (the author) is working on another set of skirmish rules specifically for the medieval period, google merseybooks to get to his blog.
