I'll be holidaying in the UK during August. What conventions, etc, on on during August?
Thanks

Where in the UK, England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland?
Where abouts in those countries?

How far (in hours) are you willing to travel?

etc etc.

partizan.org.uk and click on wargames calendar 2013 to get the list.

If you can extend your visit to 1st September Partizan is a good show.

Angel, the boy is from Oz. If The show is good enough, he will travel…if his real boss will let him.

Rapier Miniatures06 May 2013 5:46 a.m. PST

Yes but travelling in the UK is different, where in Oz or Us you look at distance in hours, in the UK you compute density, so look at the map, estimate, double it and add a bit.

Indeed, it can take me over an hour to travel 4 miles in my city.
Will he really drive for 6 hours to get to a show?

You could have a 70 mile journey, travel 65 miles in 1 hour then spend another hour doing the last 5.

Hence the questions to try and provide some local knowledge, rather than just list shows and let him possibly make a mistake in calculations and have a crap day out.

We drive 15 hours for Cold Wars and Historicon each year!

The Great British Beer Festival is on 13-17 August at Olympia in London

It is held in the halls nearest the station (i.e. not the ones used by the Warlords for Salute).

In the UK the longest direct road trip you can make anywhere is approx 840 miles and in theory takes just under 14 hours.

15 hours driving and you would drown! :o)

Tjraymond,
There is a new show this year near Bristol on Sunday 11th August – well not quite a new show as the local branch of the IPMS is doubling its annual show & incorporating a sizeable war gaming element.
My club Lincombe Barn are actively involved & I'm advising on the wargaming side.

Another mention for Britcon. 9-11 August, in Manchester, a city which is also home of the Imperial War Museum North.

Many different periods to play and I'm sure someone could lend you an army if needed.

Claymore in Edinburgh is a great show plus you can dress it up as a romantic weekend if you have a wife/partner you come to the show they shop or visit the sites

Thanks to one and all – I'll se how it all lines up.

Dave Knight13 May 2013 5:25 a.m. PST

Another plus for Claymore is that is on at the same time as the Edinburgh Festival (although that can make accomodation more expensive/scarce)

Er… not since 2005 (2006 onwards Salute has been at Excel).

John

Having missed only one Salute in the last 20years or so, I'm aware of the move.

I was trying to point out to TMPers, whose only knowledge of Olympia might be Salute, that the halls are different to those formerly used by the Warlords.
