I think we've sadly lost some very 'tanky' tanks

14Bore | 07 May 2013 4:43 p.m. PST |
Re-reading the original post it has to be two different tanks, so this could in theory last forever. |
| gweirda | 07 May 2013 4:54 p.m. PST |
"You must HURT TWO tanks (must be 2 different) by reducing their score by 1 You must HEAL ONE tank by increasing its score by 1." Since the 'different' rule is only mentioned for the HURTs, one could argue that a HEAL could be applied to one that had been HURT. The result would effectively be to simply apply a single HURT on your turn? |

17 Panther 14 Centurion Since just two tanks are left, I'd say the tank with the highest number is the Tankiest Tank! Well, maybe. That was fun! |
| Last Hussar | 07 May 2013 6:13 p.m. PST |
I was going to call a halt at 3- but missed it! I think we can now say that the tankiest of tanks is the Panther 1st on 17 – Panther 2nd on 14 – Centurion 3rd – T34 EDIT Did a quick post to close this down: I will come back when it isnt 6:13 PST, or 1:14 as we like to call it in proper time, GMT (2:14 BST) Unless someone else wants to work out the league table (all I know is the M1 went first!) There was a stage I thought the M24 would be up there at then end. |
| Fred Cartwright | 08 May 2013 1:48 a.m. PST |
I make it:- Panther Centurion T-34 M60 Panzer IV M24 M48 Char B Mk IV Male M3 T-55 Churchill M1 Abrams Good result for the Germans with only 2 tanks in the fight to manage 1st and 5th. |
| Peter Constantine | 08 May 2013 4:01 a.m. PST |
I weep for the Char B1 and have stifled everyone who hurt it! Yeah
I still think the Char B1 is more 'tanky' than the Panther and I suspect this might be more of a popularity/performance result. Should have made the contestants fit snorkels and had a swimwear round

Yes, a tank with interleaved road wheels, paper thin side armour and a tendency for spontaneous combustion wins! Unlike the mighty Centurian which still soldiers on, to a greater or lesser degree. |

Yes, a tank with interleaved road wheels, paper thin side armour and a tendency for spontaneous combustion wins! Part of the problem was sparse competition. My 2 choices for tankiest tanks were Chieftain and Tiger I, but they didn't make the list! Very much to do with what your first experiences were I guess. For me it was seeing the Tiger I at Bovington when I was about 11 and also the Chieftain "in action" at one of those days that the army used to put on for the benefit of the taxpayers, but have long since gone. Unlike the mighty Centurian which still soldiers on, to a greater or lesser degree. More of the lesser I think. Apart from the SA Olifants (very much a new tank IMHO) does anyone else still use Centurions? Maybe Jordan, but AFAIK India and Israel have retired/sold all theirs as have all the NATO countries that had them. |
| Martin Rapier | 08 May 2013 8:53 a.m. PST |
I was mainly thinking of the Olifants:) iirc the last Centurians to see active service with the British Army were the AVRE versions in GW1. |
| Jemima Fawr | 08 May 2013 9:22 a.m. PST |
Last time I looked, the Saffers still use some Olifant 1a, which is basically a Ceturion Mk 5/2 (alongside the heavily re-worked Olifant 1b and Olifant 2). |

The Olifant 1A is basically an Israeli Shot equivalent isn't it with the Continental diesel, L7 105mm etc? The 1B looks much more heavily modified. |

The Char doesn't scream 'TANK' at me, more Mobile Pill-box From those side elevations I'd go with the M60 (top left). The T34 always makes me think of those people who push their neck forward when the walk, the Panther is very Prussian- looks like its got a broomstick rammed up its back passage. The M60 and the Centurion look relaxed but alert. I think the T55 deserved a higher placing – to my mind it is quintessentially tank, in a very Russian basic sort of way. |
| Fred Cartwright | 08 May 2013 11:32 a.m. PST |
From those side elevations I'd go with the M60 (top left). Always looked top heavy to me. More like a furniture van than a tank. The Centurion is a good looking tank too. Looks more balanced than the M60. |
| Jemima Fawr | 08 May 2013 11:52 a.m. PST |
Fred, yes it is – L7 105mm instead of the 20pdr fitted to the Mk 1, plus new engine (I think they were MAN truck engines), improved fire control and image-intensifier for the gunner. The Olifant 1b has a very different turret(reminiscent of a Leopard 2) and the Olifant 2 looks totally different. They've apparently still got about 200 Olifants of all types, but iirc they only built a dozen or so Olifant 2s before the order was cancelled, so the rest are of earlier types. |
