I played my first game of Square Bashing 2nd Edition today, here is an AAR on my blog of the incomplete game:

Incomplete because my opponent had to go swimming with his wife…

Thanks for looking!

Each Casualty causes the loss of a half base and its replacement with a casualty marker. So if you have a full unit (4 bases) your first casualty would replace a full base with a half and the placment of one marker. Subsequent losses would remove the Half base and add another marker. If you think on the basis that each full base is worth two hits.

I never played the first edition and so have only played second edition. The rules run pretty quickly as long as you keep the convention of right to left. Not sure but I thought nearly all PP rule sets have the morale phase at the beginning (except fights which are always resolved immediately) but probably mistaken…..The higher command do need some thought as you cannot always rely on being the attacker (or defender) if playing the standard rules as opposed to the specialist Trench game…

Hope you find it easier going next game.

I didn't have to go swimming, but wading through a messy rewrite of a good ruleset while staring at your ugly mug or getting to see my wife in a swimsuit wasn't exactly a tough choice!

Abwehrschlacht29 Apr 2013 6:14 a.m. PST

Yeah, I understand what the losses are, but my figures are based with four men on each base, therefore I would have to cut all my bases in half to show the loss of casualties going by the rules. In the end we used red caps to show the casualties and casualty markers to show the morale.

I liked the higher command when opposed with the first edition, where they did very little. I was perplexed at being able to issue orders with them then taking the morale test which negated the order, but I see that as part of command and control problems on the Western Front anyway.

Thanks, having been encouraged on TMP by others as well I will stick with it and see if it flows better!

I do like the look of your armies in the orginal SB format so see your issue. As I built my armies from scratch it was easy to factor in the Half Bases. I use a single figure on a 30 x 15mm base. IIRC someone suggested building the new armies in HB formats anyway to ease the casualty removal. But that isn't going to help. (Possibly a use for your stretcher bearer teams?)

Glad to see you keeping with it, I have enjoyed your terrain articles immensely..

Si, thanks for that, I like them too, which is why I don't want to cut them up!

You can see my confusion when it says in the rules to remove a base and replace it with a casualty marker, then if the unit takes another casualty put down another casualty marker! As I said, using the red cap method we made a bit more sense of it anyway.

I will stick with it, and I will write some new terrain articles! There is one on the way as soon as I get my new camera anyway! Thanks for the kind comments!

I'm intending to buy a pack of figures for my Russians and my british to do 4+ half bases each. I really like the assets as it really restricts where you can move. Makes every turns asset choice a real interesting one.

do you put down a point barrage to break up that concentrated attack or do you lay a general barrage to restrict a general advance?

Abwehrschlacht29 Apr 2013 2:08 p.m. PST

Kevang, you've just turned a light bulb on over my head. I could do similar, make a few half bases and that solves the problem completely!

CAG 1930 Apr 2013 1:57 a.m. PST

Probably should have given you this link first

You would only need one a maximum of one half base per unit fielded for Inf and MG (ie the second casualty is a full base removal). Haven't finished determining how to model a damaged gun though, thinking along the lines of a 30mm wide base at the back or something. As I game in 10mm a lot easier to find odds and ends to use

Abwehrschlacht30 Apr 2013 3:17 a.m. PST

@CAG19, thanks for that, I'd probably only need about twelve half bases per side. I do follow your blog, but must have missed those posts. I love your armies!

I was thinking of doing my half bases as a 30mm square with two figures and a casualty marker, that way I retain the integrity and aesthetics of the unit. Well, some new figures are now on my buy list for this year's Triples…

Dorchester Bede30 Apr 2013 4:44 a.m. PST

Like you I had SB armies based on the old rules (although to save time and money I have always used three figures per base. To convert to the new rules I just bought a few extra figures to make half bases, as for damaged MG I have got round this by ordering the machine gun only figure from Peter Pig (special packs) and placing these on half size bases to indicate a damaged gun. Still not sure how to mark a damaged gun as yet – perhaps some kind of engineering figure?
Stick with the rules – I think they are a development on the original SB rules & fun (occasionally frustrating) set of rules.

Yes, Bede, a single MG figure with a casualty might do it for the Machine Guns. I guess artillery could be an artillery piece with a couple of casualties scattered about?

Everyone has said to stick with the rules and I will try them again, possibly solo, then with Ninjasaurus, just so I can get the flow of the game in my head before we both try it.

CAG 1930 Apr 2013 5:05 a.m. PST

Happy to do a PBEM style thingy on BGG if Ninjasaurus is back in the pool ;)

Abwehrschlacht30 Apr 2013 5:59 a.m. PST

BGG?

Abwehrschlacht30 Apr 2013 6:00 a.m. PST

Board Game Geek, sorry forgot myself for a second there… I have never done before, how does it work?

CAG 1901 May 2013 2:05 a.m. PST

Basically used it to the record the narrative on the activity we both conduct on our own tables plus system generated dice rolling visible to all. Photos etc can be attached. Useful for explaining or resolving a rules question/process etc (in the same way as other forums etc).

Also means that you can run a game over a period of time and keep a record of the game status and config.

Post in a IGOUGO sequence and structure each post in the rules sequence. Open in the same way all forums are so input from others can be expected

20. Asset dice – eh?
Is there a total # of asset dice per army of which you can then choose to allocate a maximum as per army book
or
pick an asset and role that # of dice
or
?

Namseer04 Sep 2013 5:19 p.m. PST

Where would a Yankee get this ruleset?

stewart46A05 Sep 2013 3:46 p.m. PST

direct from Peter Pig (UK) or from Brookhurst Hobbies (US)
