Hello, I am recreating the 1st division of wellingtons army at Waterloo and was wondering can anyone help me out? I have found mixed information about he flour parties of the 4 regiments of foot guards that made up this division. We're normal battalions carried a kings colour (union flag) and a regimental colour, the guards regiments had more. One account I found tell that he Coldstream guards carried the colonels colour, lieutenant colonels colour and majors colour at Waterloo. I would be very grateful for any information or references that will help me out. |

While the Guards *had* more, I think the practise was to only *carry* a pair in battle. I can't find specifics on the Coldstream Guards offhand, but there's a good article on the 3rd Foot Guards' colours at Waterloo here, which may help: link |

Paul, You should also bear in mind that Foot Guards, then and now, reverse the normal British pattern of colours, so that a Guards King's (or today's Queen's) Colour is crimson and their Regimental Colours are Union Flags. Rod |

I hope that I'm not too late to assist with this. At Waterloo the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards carried the following: Major's Colour Gules (Crimson): in the centre the star of the order of the Garter proper, ensigned with the Crown: in the dexter canton, the Union, in issuing there from in bend a pile wavy. XIII Company A rose gules, surmounted by another argent, barbed and seeded proper, empaled with a Pomegranite or, stalked also proper. (This Company Colour was first issued by Queen Mary.)
I hope that this helps. John |
