Now that Wargames Foundry has released their new game thought would start a new thread for those of us that bought it to, discuss and comment on the game.

For those new to the game it is Jake Thornton's new Fantasy war game released mind March this year, and designed to be played with two or more players using 28mm figures.

The Game play focuses on commanding an army rather than the minute intricacies of individual miniatures and what they are armed with.

The rules are simple enough to follow and easily allow players to concentrate on what you want your army to be doing, not like some systems which sub-paragraph whole categories of rules which players in the end argue over.

The rules may not be innovative but they are smooth and play well, with a hidden depth and tactical approach which makes it an enjoyable system. Leaders, musicians and standard bearers all have a point to play in the game and add not only interest but define how your unit works.

The system covers everything you need to play with no hidden extra issues like, must buy several add-ons to play and support the game. (This I like, one book to rule it all)

Jake Explain in his blog:
As well as all the basics of building armies and how to move and fight across the battlefield with them, God of Battles contains rules for miracles, weather, scenarios, camps, baggage trains, varying terrain and 10 complete army lists with over 20,000 words of background. It is a complete product in a single volume.

The combat system is based on the declare and then measure, so that makes for a fun (defender) and at times bloody (attacker) frustrating.

Army lists are easy and cover the usual races.
Norse Dwarfs
Orc Warlords
Thousand Tribes – Mix,inc. Halflins
Lords of Undeath
Blood Gorged – Beastmen
Mercenary – Human
The Godless – dark (very) elves
Sea elfs
T'lekkan Empires – Giant bugs

Scale of engagements are:
Skirmish 24 points
Battle 36 " "
Havoc 48 " "
Slaughter 60 " "

Example army list – cut down

- Blood Gorged -
Brutes Ravagers 12 Points – 10 Models
Brutes 6 Points – 10 Models
Slayers 12 Points – 10 Models
Younglings 12 Points – 8 Models

- Command -

Herdlord 12 Points – Character
Shaman 18 Points – Character

Such costs mean that you do not need a lot of figures and the system allows any ranges to be used as it is very flexible.

Magic has no range an if you want to cast spells you need a priest or shaman, and the system here means that an opponent can try to stop or thwart your casting, at the risk of not having enough spell points to cast their spells.

Movement and targeting are from leader to leader and allow players to easily range and stops attempts to fudge the rules.

Musicians, standard bears and such all have uses and can help turn a battle.

Average army size is about 30-40 miniatures so small scale but fast action. Good for those looking for a change from WHB or trying out a new fantasy system as compatible with any fantasy miniatures.

I don't think the rules are currently available given Foundry's recent website shuffle.

I couldn't find it on their eBay shop, and their direct link on their FB page is broken.

Does this game use block movement for the figures (a la Warhammer) or could you play the game with your models arranged in skirmish squads?

Can't find much on this game, sounds interesting though.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the review! I've been searching for a new 28mm fantasy game, something simple, streamlined, and fairly generic. I'd like to find something that isn't setting dependent, where magic doesn't steal the show, and that isn't filled with bunny rules. "Smooth" sounds better than "innovative" to my ears. It looks like this might fit the bill.

There is next to nothing on the web about it though, and for the moment you seem to be the game's only spokesperson.

I found the book on ebay at $40 USD with $15 USD shipping (to the US). A pretty penny, but perhaps worth it if the game is right. Here are a few questions, but any further info that you can provide would be appreciated.

I would like to re-iterate PatrickWR's question:Is this a block formation (mass) combat system or a skirmish system as far as movement is concerned?

Are the armies geared around foundry's line of minis or could you reasonably play with whatever you have got? From what you have posted it looks like the former might be the case.

Thanks

Units can be either formed or loose

As a lead collector, your army if say dwarf mercenaries (whihc mine are) are in units of 12 figures costing 5 points per unit so you can have 12 units in a 60 point army.

What makes it different is you also get the same in command and special points, these can be items such as war machines, bodyguard, charactors and special abilities, items or enhancements to your units.

You can also add 1/3 of build points as allies to the lists.

The lists are based on foundy`s figures however easy to use others and the mercenarie/allies allows a lot of flexibility.

It being the first saturday of the month, it was God of Battles day at Foundry today. We've done a few of these now and I thought it might be nice to change things up a bit. So, after talking to Marcus at Foundry, I've decided to run a little tournament next time for anyone who wants to bring an army along and play. This will be the 7th of September. Foundry will be providing some prizes for the competitive among you, and if the normal sessions are anything to go by, everyone will have a fun time.

As it's our first go at this I don't expect this will be very large in terms of numbers of generals, so I think we should keep it down to a 24 point army, including both Main Force and Command & Support. Models don't have to be Foundry's (though it would be nice) nor do they absolutely have to be painted (though that would be nice too). The one restriction is no Behemoths in T'lekkan armies. I'm thinking of making these 25 points anyway and this would reflect that change. I'll explain why later, but for now just don't take one. Everything else is as listed in the book.

As mentioned, there will be prizes. Exactly what they're for hasn't yet been decided, but winning battles is rather likely to crop up among them ;)

It will be free to come and play (or watch). You just bring your army and any miracle cards, dice, tape measures, lucky sheep, etc you need. Tables, scenery, tea and biscuits will all be provided.

Any questions, just ask.
