I picked up a couple of packs of "Pirates of the Spanish Main" and love the ships, but am not liking the simplistic rules. Has anyone used other rules for these or what rules could I use for these, that would add a lot more but not to much detail. I have though about getting Peter Pig's Pieces of Eight, but have not realy heard to much about them. Also does anyone know what scale these ships roughly fit with.

Thanks,

Tebo

Wooden Ships and Iron Men? Or Pirates! from Flagship Games.

I haven't got the foggiest, although it seems like that topic is a constant one around here.

I abosolutley love the ships and think it is a fine game to play with my samll children, but those ships scream for a good set of rules.

Beat To Quarters, available free on the internet, gets a lot of good reviews. WS&IM is good, but gaming mechanisms have advanced since them. The age of sail is a tough one for a simple but satisfying set of rules, but I will agree that the rules for Spanish Main reek.

What about Pieces of Eight from Peter Pig? It's designed for 1/450 scale ships, so should be moderately easy to convert to PotSM ships.

What about a variation of man o war? It wouldn't be too hard to make ship sheets with today's scanners and other fun graphics software.

If you head over to Boardgamegeek.com, and do a search there are alot of posts for alternate rules.

You could try a Full Thrust mod -- it works for Vietnam helicopters and Lepanto galleys, so sailing pirates ought to be simple enough...

MWAN Magazine, Issue #129 had a great set of (free) rules for this sort of action. It's a well tested rules set and fun to play!

2nd recommendation for Beat to Quarters.

I'm planning to adapt the models to Thundering Broadsides (a revised version of Beat to Quarters that includes a campaign system and extra scenarios)

I pulled out my MWAN #129 and the ship rules look pretty simple and fun. They are probably what I will use (currently in the process of collecting enough ships to game a nice size battle of about 24 ships of the line.)
