I posted a battle report on my blog about a recent battle using what I consider a very usable rules set and a nice army list booklet from the older days. A nice combo for some good games. link |

I am curious, as a newcomer to Warhammer (though I own tons of stuff including all of the 6th editions books and supplements), did you feel the 8th edition rules work better as a ruleset than the older editions? I can see the logic behind the Ravening Hordes lists and skipping all the special rules/fluffs/buffs of the army books, but which ruleset? |

For a moment I thought you were referring to the original 'Ravening Hordes' book from 2nd edition, which is a fun bunch of armies too. This was a nice read and sounded like a fun game
much more about maneuvering and butting heads
less of the CCG sounding arrangements of powers and 'combos'. For whatever reason a lot of WFB games I see these days seem very static
but this one wasn't. |

@KenofYork Thanks for sharing. The idea of using old lists with the newest rules appeals to me also. |

"did you feel the 8th edition rules work better as a ruleset than the older editions" Yes I kind of do. 3rd was my favorite, but there are enough nice changes to 8th to make it better in my opinion. Taking losses from the back has stopped the thing I hated most in combat, which was getting attacked and then only having 1 or 2 models left to fight back with. It has some movement options with Ld checks for maneuvers, which played a part in our game. But not as complex as the 3rd edition simple and complex formations, etc. I like the pre-measuring and random charges. It had some impact. Overall it resulted in few rules arguments and I got to dust off some very old models. Also, I am now inspired to paint again! Essentially I am in the same place as I am with my swimming pool. I am either going to use these painted armies or get rid of them. Likewise, the pool gets swam in or torn down. This experiment was something I wanted to do for a while and the initial impression was very good. |

This is how I started my on WH8 thing. But I do like the new army books until know, so I am investing in them. That said WH8+ RH is a good inexpensive way to do WH. |

Blimey is Ravening Hordes II 13 years old ! I have both. Maybe I would do better with 8th but my opponent insists on using 7th ! |

I think 8th is a good rule set. Of course I play in a controlled environment. We don't allow magic to dominate. We don't play with death star units. It's fun. Xin |

"We don't allow magic to dominate. We don't play with death star units." Sadly that is exactly how my opponent likes to play – he does the same with role playing – I just go along with it to avoid wasting game time arguing and because he is a mate! It is nice to know that I'm not alone ! I know this is a seperate issue but do other people play games they don't really enjoy just to use their figures and socialise? |
