Brooklyn Wargamer23 Apr 2013 1:12 p.m. PST

Hello all:
I would like to propose that everyone who is interested in the creation of the 14th Brooklyn/NYSM in 28mm go over to the Perry website and petition for their creation. link

I know most of us don't have the money to privately fund this a la King's Mountain Miniature's AWI 71st Highlanders, so I think that those interested should start with petitioning the Perry Bros. to do the 14th. If it doesn't happen, then we might do something else to have them done. I really want to see them done pretty soon (and I'm not getting any younger…;)
My petition went like this:
"Hello:
I'd like to petition the creation of the 14th Brooklyn/NYSM miniatures in plastic/metal for the ACW. I know that there are a few people who are interested and I believe that you would do them justice with your excellent sculpts."

Let me know what you think.

Timmo uk23 Apr 2013 1:17 p.m. PST

The Perrys always listen with interest to any suggestions. I suspect you'll get a nice friendly chatty email back thanking you for your excellent idea and that they would like to do them at some point in the future.

mjkerner23 Apr 2013 1:18 p.m. PST

Done!

LtJBSz23 Apr 2013 1:21 p.m. PST

what is so different about the 14th that you can't use any of the other kepi wearing zouave figures that are out there?

FireZouave23 Apr 2013 1:48 p.m. PST

"what is so different about the 14th that you can't use any of the other kepi wearing zouave figures that are out there?"

The style of the jacket, the buttons, the collar, the epaulets, the braid, the unbaggy style chasseur pants. To us who know and care, it's a big difference! Not sure if they had saber bayonets or not, but if so, that needs to be done too!

Sparker23 Apr 2013 1:59 p.m. PST

Well look I'm not going to chain myself to any trees or anything, I'm not the activist type, and I'm DEFINITELY not going on hunger strike, not when its Pizza night tonight, but I would certainly purchase said models if the Perrys were to listen to mere mortals like us…

14th Brooklyn23 Apr 2013 2:03 p.m. PST

Hey… I already exist! evil grin

45thdiv23 Apr 2013 2:13 p.m. PST

I though foundry made some.

Brooklyn Wargamer23 Apr 2013 2:32 p.m. PST

45thdiv@: No, Foundry has baggy Zouaves with turbans and fez; 14th Brooklyn wore chasseur type clothing; kepis, blue jackets with false vest, 14 buttons on the vest, the tunics, and gaiters numbered 7 and/or a combination totaling 14. The trousers were red and not as baggy as the "zouave" type trousers.

I hope that anyone who's interested email or contact the Perry's using this link as a step closer to bringing this fine regiment to life in 28mm.

Also, This Regiment fought in many major battles during the War, First and Second Bull Run (Mananas), Antietam, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Battle of Wilderness and at Spotsylvania, so also a strong reason to have them made. Lastly, I did not know I lived pretty near the Eighth Avenue Armory in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This kind of seals the deal for me…

Jorge

45thdiv23 Apr 2013 3:42 p.m. PST

Thanks Jorge. Was not sure.

45thdiv23 Apr 2013 3:44 p.m. PST

Oh, what pose are you wanting? Marching, firing, Attack? I like either marching or firing line for ACW.

45thdiv23 Apr 2013 3:57 p.m. PST

Okay, sent in my request. Your last comment about their battles I also used as a selling point for the perry brothers to make these sets. They need to know how versatile these would be to produce.

Brooklyn Wargamer23 Apr 2013 4:09 p.m. PST

@45thdiv: That's true. I would Like them firing or marching. I will follow up until they tell me to stop (LOL).

And everyone, please let everyone else know about this informal "petition"; you may not care about this Regiment if you fancy the South or the Western Theater but you might probably know someone who does.

Thanks!!!

Great idea!

One of my very first 15mm ACW regiments was the 14th Brooklyn – would be great to do them in 28mm!

Personal logo Der Alte Fritz Sponsoring Member of TMP23 Apr 2013 4:24 p.m. PST

Why limit yourself only to Perry for your request? I believe that there are a couple other companies that make 28mm ACW figures.

Brooklyn Wargamer23 Apr 2013 4:27 p.m. PST

@Der Alte Fritz: Yes, that's true. I was thinking of writing to Renegade and Sash and Saber. Another alternative as I said before was to go the route of King's Mountain Miniatures and have them sculpted, but I honestly don't know where to start, who to talk to and how much it would cost me. I can probably scrounge up $400 USD or $500 USD, but I don't know how much it really could be.

FireZouave23 Apr 2013 5:36 p.m. PST

Armchair, it will probably cost you minimum of $200 USD per sculpt. Specialty troops probably more. But if anyone was to do it, I would want the quality of the Perrys. They get better and better all the time!

SashandSaber Sponsoring Member of TMP23 Apr 2013 5:43 p.m. PST

"I was thinking of writing to Renegade and Sash and Saber"

We plan on having them for release at Historicon.

Chris

Brooklyn Wargamer23 Apr 2013 6:11 p.m. PST

Wow, that was quick!!!

Could you please give us a peek!!!

45thdiv23 Apr 2013 6:29 p.m. PST

Chris is always a fast sculptor. I really enjoy the way his troops paint up. Sash and saber make up 75 percent of my 28mm ACW set up. That's about 750 figures, and artillery.

Chris, I have just started the dismounted cavalry sets I bought from you at last year's Historicon.

What pose will they be in?

Matthew

Brooklyn Wargamer23 Apr 2013 6:50 p.m. PST

I bought both the S&S Federal and Confederate Infantry Skirmishing/Firing Regiment packs and am in the process of painting them. I love painting them.
Chris, give a peek.

Jorge

badger2223 Apr 2013 8:13 p.m. PST

Yes indeed a peek! So glad to see this happening. I have held off doing the 14th for some time in the hope that somebody would do them specificly. Great news.

Owen

He will be starting on them tomorrow. evil grin

And

They will look better than any other ACW range, hands down.

Disco Joe24 Apr 2013 5:27 a.m. PST

Chris, might I suggest at least one pack of the 14th be in a pose where they are advancing with the rifle either straight out or slightly raised. I am not a fan of marching and firing is okay but this would give alittle more variety. Just a thought.

firstvarty197924 Apr 2013 11:56 a.m. PST

There aren't that many choices to sculpt figures in if you want authentic poses: Shoulder Arms, Right Shoulder Shift, Support Arms, and the (Left) Shoulder Arms if they were using an earlier drill. I don't like poses of them doing Charge Bayonets much as the muskets stick way out over the base. Other than those, it's all Firing and Loading poses, unless you're looking for odd stuff like "Guard Against Cavalry" and the like.

Incidentally, my friend used these Perry Miniatures for his 14th Brooklyn unit: link

Forgotten Glorious24 Apr 2013 3:02 p.m. PST

Well strangely enough I am currently working on a pile of reference material for Alan Marsh who is going to make 13 figures of them for me: this is a purely own project independent of any professional project I am currently involved in but it will take some weeks or months to become reality: I asked Alan to make them as they rushed the unfinished railroad cut at the double quick right shoulder shift.

I did not plan to sell them at first but if someone falls in love with the figures I will see what can be done.

Now it is cool Chris at S&S makes them for Historicon

Brooklyn Wargamer24 Apr 2013 4:47 p.m. PST

@Forgotten Glorious: So, the ones you are having done are in right shoulder shift?

Personal logo Der Alte Fritz Sponsoring Member of TMP24 Apr 2013 6:33 p.m. PST

When it rains it pours. An embarrassment of riches all of a sudden. This is your lucky day Armchair Wargamer. Now you will have two sources for the 14th Brooklyn after starrting the day with none. I'd go out and buy a lottery ticket today while your good luck karma is running strong. thumbs up

sma194125 Apr 2013 7:20 a.m. PST

I love Sash and Sabre miniatures as much as Perry sculpts.

Forgotten Glorious25 Apr 2013 7:22 a.m. PST

Yes they are going to be in right shoulder shift

Brooklyn Wargamer25 Apr 2013 12:53 p.m. PST

@Der Alte Fritz: LOL, yes I probably should.

@Forgotten Glorious: I'd be interested, let me know and keep us posted.

Jorge

Forgotten Glorious25 Apr 2013 12:56 p.m. PST

Ok Jorge

No problem but it is a long process :)

cheers

Historicon and Sash & Saber!

HammerHead26 Apr 2013 10:51 p.m. PST

Perry`s are open to e-mails suggesting new things and they will take the trouble to reply.
I would like troops in frock coat with different hat options

Oooh! 14th Brooklyn/84th New York at Historicon from Sash & Saber in 25/28mm, sounds like that'll be one purchase made, if I attend this year. How many figures in the line, 10 regulars, and a group of command maybe as well, similar to the dismounted cav for 14, or will there be more?

d effinger27 Apr 2013 8:44 a.m. PST

HammerHead,

Hey, me too! I've been wanting them with Forage caps and slouch hats for years. Redoubt makes them and their separate heads and these models aren't very good, Foundry makes Union soldiers with Forage caps but they look too well fed and the same goes for the Perry metals. I just want lean soldiers like there were in the CW.

Don

Brooklyn Wargamer27 Apr 2013 10:07 a.m. PST

I've written a couple of times to Perry but have never gotten a reply.

SashandSaber Sponsoring Member of TMP27 Apr 2013 2:31 p.m. PST

There will be a pack of 10 firing line plus a 4 figure command pack. We may add right shoulder shift later on.

Brooklyn Wargamer27 Apr 2013 8:09 p.m. PST

@SashandSaber: Excellent! I am so looking forward in buying them as soon as you have them available!

FireZouave07 May 2013 12:47 p.m. PST

Looks like I'll be making a purchase from Sash& Saber at Historicon too!

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2013 8:44 a.m. PST

Can anyone tell me how S&S and Perry's mix together?

Brooklyn Wargamer08 May 2013 6:36 p.m. PST

Well:

It is a question of taste. The S&S figures look more dynamic, but are slightly taller than Perry's. I am building armies with both types, but will not mix figures in units; either all Perry or all S&S. YMMV.

vonLoudon11 May 2013 6:00 a.m. PST

Minifigs 15mm strips had 14th Brooklyn as I recall. I painted them up with red pants and red kepis. They were spiffy. I would suggest Minifigs find a way to stretch these or blow them up somehow. Just my $.35 USD per strip.

HammerHead11 May 2013 1:49 p.m. PST

d effinger, I guess they check these pages from time to time.
Redoubts can be a real mixed bag, they look real good on the web site but can be disappointing when you get an order.
Regards HH

d effinger11 May 2013 3:49 p.m. PST

HH,

Yes, you are right about Redoubt. Sadly some are less impressive than others. The whole separate heads thing is a great idea but their heads are not that good. I have not found that they fit very well. The hole in the torso and the pin for the heads is not a match. The hole is waaay too big so you have to do a lot of work. Then… the heads are badly cast. The mold line runs down the center of the face and some of mine (I'm being generous here) are off centered making it next to impossible to fix. To top it off the sculptor knows very little about headgear and hair styles in the CW but… I suppose that's me being too critical. Oh well.

Don

Brooklyn Wargamer11 May 2013 7:18 p.m. PST

@ d effinger:
I had the same experience with Redoubt. I bought two regiments, the heads didn't fit, had mold lines running down the center of the heads; around ten were miscast (think of Quasimodo and you'll get the idea). I sold them because I was frustrated. I will stick to S&S, Old Glory and Perry's from now on.

HammerHead11 May 2013 11:11 p.m. PST

As my collections has grown I have become more fussy about my figures. Redoubt heads seem small, or at lease not in proportion to the `chunky` body. I bought some artillery figures recently a they are fine, the dismounted cavalry packs were disappointing. I had some spare Steve Barber figure heads & they seem more in proportion to the Redoubt bodies.

Any update for the Sash and Saber 14th Brooklyn?

mahdi1ray31 May 2013 8:21 p.m. PST

I just petitioned Perry to cast the 84 NY Vol Inf.

"Any update for the Sash and Saber 14th Brooklyn?"

We'll release them at Historicon in July. Also, we plan on releasing a 24lb Howitzer as well.
