I've mentioned this book on these pages in the past, but still haven't got my hands on a copy. Being, to my knowledge, the only English language MILITARY history of the Mexican Revolution, which includes orders of battle for the actions described, I would very much like to. Past emails to the author/vendor James R. Hinds (web address hist2students.com) have gone unanswered. Does anyone know of a way to obtain a copy of this book? (I reside in Australia). I even suggested it to OMM for their stocklist (Mr Hinds offers a 50% discount on purchases of five or more copies). I believe Dennis tried to buy a batch without success. |

Looks like an interesting book, not sure I`m interested enough to pay $45 USD (plus postage to me here in the UK) though. |
Henry Martini | 22 Apr 2013 1:42 a.m. PST |
Do you know of an alternative, Richard? |
Richard Baber | 22 Apr 2013 3:26 a.m. PST |
Well there are dozens of books out there, a quick search on ABEbooks.com "Mexican Revolution" listed about 50 titles – some of which had nothing to do with Revolution or were novels :-( But there were lots of books, how good or useful they are, I couldn`t say, but certainly for $45 USD (plus P&P) I could have bought maybe 15 titles
For my interest and wargaming, I can make do with a couple of basic histories and the internet, this is just a "fun" period for me. My basic reading Spanish is good enough to translate simple text and military terms are easy to follow once you get used to them. When I did my research into the Spanish military and the war in Morocco in the early 1920s, most of that history was in Spanish, without the language, much of the history was unavailable; so I had to learn

Amazon says it is not available. Does show it when I searched for it. |

I think it's clear this book--which is indeed very tempting--is written and self-published by James R. Hinds, and is thus far exclusively available through his Website. I'm bookmarking it and next chance I get, I'll order a copy. Then again, if four other folks would go in with me, we could get five at half price, as offered. Sounds like a deal to me! TVAG |
Richard Baber | 22 Apr 2013 2:06 p.m. PST |
I`d be up for that option :-) |
Henry Martini | 22 Apr 2013 4:56 p.m. PST |
Yes, me too! To reiterate: the ONLY English language MILITARY history. I didn't know you were that old, Richard. |

very drole Henry :-) but I see what you mean – My writen English can be very poor :-( What i meant to say was – most of the information about Spanish history from the 1920s was available only in Spanish

Patrick – could you please give me an email address so that I can contact you via my own email account. Thanks. |

Gentlemen All! Well, by counting myself, I see five statements of interest in ordering as many copies of Mr. Hinds' publication, so I think we have a "goer" on this. Allow me to E-mail the Gent and confirm if there are any postage or other charges, etc, and I will post back here ASAP. Should this thread vanish downstream, I can always be reached at TVAG@att.net Depending on what the Dude has to say, I suggest that we all very publicly state that each of you is mailing his share of the order via Money Order or personal check made out to "Patrick R. Wilson" (and no other, please). I will acknowledge receipt to each and all so there is no question but that I have taken your money for this purpose. Mr. Hinds' Website says he only accepts checks for his products, so one would have to be mailed and presumably cleared first prior to shipment. Further, I don't know if he will send to five addresses, or if I will have to forward the copies myself. If so, I'd need at least $5.00 USD more from each to cover the price of Flat Rate Priority Mail to deliver your copies. I will ask if he will accept payment via PayPal, and if so, we can shave at least a couple of weeks of this deal. And if he will continue to pay the post on each book (as his site says), you would all be spared the extra fiver. So, let's see what we can do here, and if you don't find the Go Code on this thread soon, E-mail me to keep the lines open. Alright, now let's see what Mr. Hinds wants to do! TVAG |

A Footnote to Brother Baber: Being in the UK, you may still be stuck with some postage more than those of us State Side would pay. If you're willing to wait for International First Class Mail, that rate will be very reasonable--just of uncertain delivery date, but still well within a month, I'd think. Just a note for the geographically disadvantaged

I`m happy with that and fully understand postage costs. Thanks for trying to organise this, I look forward to hearing from you. |
Henry Martini | 23 Apr 2013 5:22 p.m. PST |
I would think that if the books are purchased as a job lot of five he would send them to the address of the purchaser. Would it be possible to pay you electronically, Patrick? Perhaps I could combine payment for the book with a TVAG order; I'm sure there's bound to be something on your extensive stock-list I can use. |
The Virtual Armchair General | 24 Apr 2013 9:53 a.m. PST |
Dear Henry Martini, Yes, of course you could send whatever will be your share of the deal via PayPal--however, unless Mr. Hinds will also accept payment via PayPal, it will take an extra four days at least to transfer funds from my account there to my checking account to send him the total amount due. In the meantime, I hope you will visit TVAG and see if there is anything at the moment that might be useful to you, but you are certainly under no sort of obligation to buy--though it is a lovely sentiment! More when I know it, TVAG |

Well, I've heard nothing from Patrick yet, so I'm guessing that like previous hopefuls he too was unable to elicit a response from Mr Hinds. Fortunately this doesn't leave we Mex Rev enthusiasts totally in the dark: on the yahoo group MexRevResearchers you'll find an ongoing series of posts '100 years ago today' by member Smokey, who's a fluent Spanish speaker and has access to Mexican military histories of the Revolution. These invariably contain plenty of nitty gritty military historical detail, and of course we're just entering the timeframe covered by Mr Hind's frustratingly elusive book, when the conflict starts to transition from guerilla to conventional warfare. |

Jim Hinds is my neighbor, friend, part of our game club (lvwargamers.org), and mentor to our living hsitory organization (snlha.org). He brought this thread to my attention, and asked me to answer it. It also reminded me of my dilenquence on this site of late. You can email me at jayce921 at yahoo dot com Or call at (702) 354-6875 He has copies of ALL of his books on his website available for sale. I can get with him, and have them off to you within a few days. All funds will go to the author to cover his printing costs. Older Editions are to be cleared out at a discount (Especially his Roman book). He has previously used the printers to help run sales – and as you can see – it has not worked out well. Once we help take care of our friend Mr. Hinds, my company Monomer Games, is planning to review the technology to print his books, and create a better distribution path for Historians and Wargamers. We are otherwise keeping a low profile in the recession, so a slightly stagnant website, like many other small groups. Sincerely, Jason Coffey Monomer Games Las Vegas, NV (702) 354-6875 |

I should note the cost of Jim Hinds (hardbound) books is $40 USD plus shipping. The lowest shipping will be worked out. All sales are on a case by case individual basis based on inventory and older edition status. These books were written for the love of the subject, not profit, so the basic costs need to be covered. Jim will be providing me an inventory this weekend, and when we get back from Gettysburg's 150th event, we will also be re-posting the books to Amazon and EBay as approriate. You can also contact shopofmagic.com as they are carried, but not advertised or promoted. Thank you |

So, are you saying that the multiple purchase discount is no longer available, Jason? |
Sky Captain | 19 Aug 2013 7:10 p.m. PST |
Howdy Henry, Sorry for taking so long to respond. I was waiting on an email or phone call, my bad. I promise quicker answers with Email or phone. I spoke with Jim (the author) over the weekend and he will honor his multipule discount from his website – for multipules of the same title. Note the $45 USD price includes postage: hist2students.com/order.htm "Books available (or to be available) for purchase at $45 USD each postpaid, or, at a 50% discount (plus postage and handling) when purchased in quantities of five or more copies" Thank you, Jason Coffey Monomer Games Las Vegas, NV (702) 354-6875 |

Is there still no option for Paypal? Either way, I contacted Patrick at TVAG, so hopefully we can get this done. Patrick
if we fall a book or two short, let me know and I will see if I can drum up attention over on CSW or the ColonialWars page. Andrew |

Update Gentlefolk, Patrick Wilson of "The Virtual Armchair General" and I are in the process of working out a deal with James Hinds for a few of his titles, dealing with the Mexican Revolution. There are two titles, one written in English by Mr. Hinds, while the other contains all official reports and documents. both in Spanish and in English, pertaining to the campaigns and battles of the Mexican Revolution. 3. Hinds, James R. Battles of the Mexican Revolution 1913-1915, 275 pp. plus App., 2nd edition, Las Vegas, Nevada: 2006. 4. Hinds, James R. Documents of the Mexican Revolution 1913-1915, 369 pp. 2nd edition, Las Vegas, Nevada: 2006. Please note, that not only are these two books the first comprehensive works available on the Mexican Revolution, but they contain detailed battalion level orders of battle for almost every engagement fought. We need to get at least five titles ordered in order to gain the benefit of the discount Mr. Hinds is providing us. He has also been kind enough to let us know that if we order ANY amount of the two related titles, that we can secure the discount. We are not quite sure if Mr. Hinds will be able to drop ship orders to individuals or not, so there may be an additional charge if he is unable to do so, since Patrick at TVAG would have to receive the shipment and then break it down and send the book(s) off to each customer. Still though, a 50% discount is NOT to be sneezed at and I know that several of you will be interested in this deal. If you're one of those enthusiasts, please send an Email to BOTH Patrick and myself so we can compile a list to present to Mr. Hinds sometime in early to mid-September. Please be kind enough to provide: Your physical USPS mailing address The title(s) and quantities of books you would like to order. You are more than welcome to pledge for the other titles Mr. Hinds is offering, but there will have to be at least five (5) total pledges for those titles in order to secure the discount. You don't have to do anything else until we pull the trigger. Patrick accepts Paypal, and you can also send a check or money order, BUT if you send the last two via regular mail, the order will be delayed until all funds clear. The link for the books is listed below: hist2students.com/order.htm You can contact Patrick and myself at: tvag AT att DOT net Preziosia AT aol DOT com Thanks for looking. We're really looking forward to getting these titles and hope some of you are too. Notes: Overseas customers are welcome to inquire, but it will be Patrick's decision if he will take foreign/overseas orders or not. You can expect Patrick to make a formal announcement, as a TMP vendor sometime in the coming week or so
around Labor Day. |
